Jesus had been dead two days, and his disciples were grief-stricken and fearful for their own lives. Early in the morning of the day after Sabbath, two women came to Jesus’ tomb intending to anoint Jesus’ body with spices. In Matthew’s account of what happened, he uses an old-fashioned word to describe three discoveries the women made.
