James Week 11

November 19, 2019 • Paula Thorp

What is the difference between gaining wise counsel and gossiping or slander?  When do we cross over from questioning something into judging each other?  As believers in Jesus Christ we ought to be careful with the words we speak about others.  God is the only righteous Judge.  We also must be careful to consult Him as we make plans for our lives as we do not know what each day holds.  James challenges us to live each day deliberately, remembering that God calls us to specific things each day.  Grab your Bible and join us as we finish chapter 4. Scriptures used: James 4:11-17 1 Peter 2:12 Galatians 5:15 Ephesians 4:29 Luke 12:16-21

James Week 10

What does it mean that God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble? How can we successfully resist the devil? Humility is a safeguard for our lives and helps us recognize and avoid the snares of the enemy. Pride drives us to judge one another, think more highly of ourselves than we ought and be led into all kinds of evil. God gives us a greater grace that we may overcome through His power. Scriptures used: James 4:6-10 Galatians 5:25 Matthew 4:1-11 1 Peter 5:8 Ephesians 6:10-18 Philippians 2:5-8

James Week 9

November 5, 2019 • Erin Morris

What is the reason for the conflict we have between each other? How do the passions of our hearts drive us to disunity and other sins? James explains that all sin starts with a desire in our hearts that we cultivate and allow to grow into action. He reminds us that we cannot serve both the world and its desires and also serve the Lord. We must make a choice. Grab your Bible and join us for our next portion of James. Scriptures used: James 4:1-5 2 Timothy 3:2-5 James 3:16 Galatians 5:15 Matthew 5:21-24 Matthew 18:15-17 Matthew 5:29-30 Luke 8:4-15 1 Kings 18:21

James Week 8

October 29, 2019 • Paula Thorp

What is wisdom? How does Godly wisdom differ from worldly wisdom? Selfishness and jealousy can motivate us to all kinds of evil, but God’s wisdom will guard and guide us. Through wisdom we can understand how to be pure, peaceable, gentle and merciful. Scriptures used: James 3:13-18 Proverbs 25:11 2 Corinthians 5:21

James Week 7

October 22, 2019 • Lisa McGill

It’s easy to use our tongues inappropriately. We often use the wrong tone, speak without thinking, or we’re quick to defend and speak when we are angry. In chapter 3, James discusses the extreme power of our tongue, reminding us that words have a great impact on our lives and the lives of others. He emphasizes that we need to be extremely careful with the words we choose to utilize.

What does “saving faith” look like? Is it possible to know some things about God and not be saved? What do works have to do with faith? James lays out three different kinds of faith in this text, but only one is true faith. Join us as we examine what the difference is and how you can be sure your faith is real.

James Week 5

October 1, 2019 • Paula Thorp

How can we love our neighbor as ourselves? How can we show preference to one another in love? If we show partiality to those around us, we sin and fail to love how Christ loved us. If we have received the mercy of God we should extend that to each other. Join us as we examine our next section of James 2.

James Week 4

September 24, 2019 • Erin Morris

How does God feel about partiality? How is partiality different from showing honor or respect? Join us as we examine what the Bible says about partiality, how we sometimes fall into the trap of it and what we can do to more closely emulate Christ.

James Week 3

September 17, 2019 • Tracey Helms

What does pure, undefiled religion look like in the eyes of God? How should knowing Christ impact our walk? The Bible tells us that our faith should change us from the inside out. We should walk in His promises, His ways and care about those that are in distress. As we walk with the Lord, we can experience true transformation. Join us this week as we examine our next portion of James.

We all face times of testing and trials in our lives. As believers in Jesus Christ, how should we approach trials? Is it possible that trials can even be good for us?
