Bible in a Year 2023

How do I read the Bible?

January 1, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Luke 24:13–25

As you know, we are reading the Bible together in 2023 and we start our reading plan on the first Monday of the year, January 2nd. For many of us, this sounds like a daunting task. We wonder, how do I read the Bible? That’s the question we’ll take up this Sunday and hope to leave you more equipped to read the Bible in the new year. Pastor Josh

The Storyline of Scripture

January 8, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Genesis 1:1, Genesis 2:7–9, Genesis 2:15–17, Genesis 3:6–24, Genesis 12:1–3

The Bible is a story that leads us to Jesus Christ.  Even though we are only in the first week of our readings, there have already been significant developments in the storyline of Scripture, including the creation, humanity’s fall into sin, judgment, and the promise of redemption.  This Sunday we’ll consider these developments and hope to be in a position to better appreciate the story as a whole.  Pastor Josh

To Cut a Covenant

January 15, 2023 • Rev. Adam Feichtmann • Genesis 15, Genesis 17:1–14

Covenants are counter-intuitive in our society.  Traditional marriage vows sound wild to our modern ears. Do couples really mean, “for better or worse, for richer or poor, in joy and in sorrow”?!  We live in a culture full of convenient agreements, compared to binding relationships. When peoples’ perceived agreement is broken, or too hard, they often will try and get out of their contract.  This Sunday we will continue our Bible in a Year sermon series and study the biblical treasure of a covenant - looking at God’s covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15 & 17.  I look forward to worshiping with you on Sunday!  Pastor Adam

Moses at the Burning Bush

January 22, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Exodus 3

This Sunday, in Exodus 3, we will encounter God at the burning bush. We will hope to leave changed--like Moses was--knowing the God who hears the pleas of his people and is mighty to save.   I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Pastor Josh

Water from a Rock

January 29, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Exodus 17:1–7

This week we will follow the freed Israelites in the desert as they journey toward the promised land. Along the way, Exodus 17 records a most unusual miracle—God provides for his people with water from a rock. Later in Scripture, in 1 Corinthians, Paul explains the most unusual meaning to this event—“that rock was Christ.”   See you on Sunday! Pastor Josh

Dwelling With God: God’s Teaching in the Tabernacle

February 5, 2023 • Rev. Derek Rishmawy • Exodus 25:1–8, Exodus 29:45–46, Exodus 36:1–7

Exodus 25-40 gives detailed instructions about how the Israelites were to construct the Tabernacle within which they were to worship the LORD. While texts like these can be intimidating and dense, in this week's sermon, we will be explaining how these seemingly arcane building manuals actually point us to the heart of the Covenant and a renewed understanding of life with God. See you on Sunday! Pastor Derek

The Day of Atonement

February 12, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Leviticus 16:6–34

This week we’ve come to the place where most Bible in a Year plans crash and burn, Leviticus!   In it, as Jen Pollock Michel writes “the sacrificial system is described in gruesome detail, including what must be done with the blood, fat, and entrails of each animal slaughtered for human sin. It's a book filled with smoke and scent, and a river of blood runs through it: drained, collected, and spattered for the purposes of consecration and purification.” This Sunday we’ll attempt to understand the sacrificial system as a whole, give special attention to The Day of Atonement, and then ask what are the main takeaways for a modern Christian? See you on Sunday Pastor Josh

A Blessing

February 19, 2023 • Rev. Adam Feichtmann • Numbers 6:22–27

We all crave blessings. We crave blessings from our family members, spouses, friends, employers, and other people of influence.  We long for people to delight over us, to wish us well, and commit to seeing us flourish.  This Sunday, we’ll continue our Bible in a Year series by entering the book of Numbers and focusing on Numbers 6:22-27 - where God speaks his most famous blessing over his people. To prepare for Sunday, meditate on this blessing and be comforted by the reality that God still speaks those words over you!  I look forward to worshiping with you all.  Pastor Adam

Snakes on the Tree

Ten Rules for Life

March 5, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Deuteronomy 5, Deuteronomy 6:1–5

In Deuteronomy 4, Moses exclaims, “What great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God? And what great nation is there that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law?”   This Sunday we’ll consider The Ten Commandments, the summary and center of God’s law. We’ll hope to grow in our understanding of these ten rules for life, as well as the Christian’s response to all of the laws of the Torah.  See you on Sunday! Pastor Josh

The Sabbath

March 12, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Deuteronomy 5:12–15

Thus far, in the Torah, we have frequently read about Israel’s worship celebrations and festivals. On Sunday, we’ll consider what is most basic to Israel’s pattern of worship, the Sabbath.   We’ll hope to be able to understand the Sabbath as it develops in the story of Scripture, including what it means for us today to keep the fourth commandment in which we are told, “Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy…” We look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Pastor Josh

The Battle of Jericho

March 19, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Joshua 5:13–15, Joshua 6

This week we accompany Joshua and the Israelites as they begin the conquest of the promised land with the battle of Jericho. We’ll seek to understand the passage as one part of the unfolding story of Scripture and also ask what are the main takeaways for the modern Christian. See you on the Sabbath!   Pastor Josh

Choose Whom You Will Serve

March 26, 2023 • Rev. Adam Feichtmann • Joshua 24:1, Joshua 24:14–29

Have you ever renewed your wedding vows or been to a vow renewal ceremony?  Such a ceremony is powerful, because both parties are choosing to stand by the promises they made years before.  This Sunday we will continue our Bible in a Year sermon series by looking at Israel’s covenant renewal ceremony in Joshua 24. After Israel has conquered the Promised Land and divided up the tribes, at the end of Joshua’s life, his final call to Israel is to choose to renew her covenantal vows to the LORD.  I look forward to worshiping with you all this Sunday, as we, like Israel, consider choosing to renew our vows to the LORD!  Pastor Adam

Samson

April 2, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • Judges 13:1–5, Judges 13:24–25, Judges 15:14–20, Judges 16:4–31

In our Bible in a Year readings, we have come to one of the most memorable characters in Scripture, Samson. He was renowned for his strength as well as his weakness, all of which God used to save his people of old.   Join us on Sunday and together we’ll take up Samson’s exciting story and seek to understand the way it contributes to the larger story of salvation in Christ. Pastor Josh

David, Goliath, & Jesus

April 9, 2023 • Rev. Josh Hahne • 1 Samuel 16:1, 1 Samuel 16:10–13, 1 Samuel 17:1–11, 1 Samuel 17:31–58

This Sunday we take up the famous story of David & Goliath. It is a smashing story in its own right, but also one that points to God’s victory through his anointed, Jesus. Grab a neighbor, friend, or coworker and join us Sunday as we celebrate Easter.   Pastor Josh
