Turning Tables
March 7, 2021 • Rev. Erin Wathen
There's a difference between calling out, and calling in.
When you call someone out, you name their sin out loud. You put them in their place. Maybe you shame them, knock them down a few pegs. But when you call someone IN, you extend an invitation. You create space for growth and transformation. You open the door for restored relationship.
The challenge, of course, is having the wisdom to know when it is time to flip over the table, maybe even bring the whole house http://down...and when it is time to call folks in.
Jesus seems to have a pattern for this. There aren’t many times when we see him angry, flipping over tables. Most often, he turns tables in other ways. Disciples of today find ourselves at a unique moment in history. When so many are hungry and hurting; when the gap between the privileged and the marginalized continues to grow; and when so much of life as we knew it has been lost to a season of quarantine… there is a wide open space to build what’s next. Will we go back to what was? Or can we whip up something new, something better?
The space has been cleared. The foundation is there. What will we build?
