God Killed My Old Man | Episode 1 | Open Vision

"God Killed My Old Man" is a brand new series by Duane Sheriff that explores our identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. This understanding is crucial for Christians to walk in the power of the gospel and overcome sin. Duane shares a personal experience of an open vision of Jesus on the cross. In this vision, he saw himself united with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. This revelation led him to search the Scriptures and discover the truth about our identity in Christ. There is a difference between the "old man" in Adam, who has a sinful nature, and the "new man" in Christ, who is righteous and holy. God has crucified our old man with Christ, as stated in Romans 6:6: "Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin." Even though God has killed the old man, we still need to change our behavior and mindset. This transformation requires us to renew our minds, as mentioned in Ephesians 4:22-24: "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." Understanding and embracing our new identity in Christ empowers Christians to overcome sin and live a renewed life.

In the second episode of "God Killed My Old Man," Duane Sheriff teaches the importance of understanding our new identity in Christ. It is vital to grasp the concept that our previous old sinful nature died with Christ, and now we are raised to new life in Him. Galatians 2:20 says, "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me." This verse illustrates how our old self has died, and we now live through Christ's life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." This transformation occurs in our spirit while our soul and body are still in the process of renewal. We have a three-part nature - spirit, soul, and body - as described in 1 Thessalonians 5:23. Our spirit is instantly transformed at salvation. In contrast, our soul (mind, will, and emotions) is being renewed, and our body will be fully redeemed at Christ's return. Set your mind on things above because you have died with Christ, and your life is now hidden with Him.

Christians no longer have two natures battling within them but only one new nature in Christ. Romans 6:11 instructs believers to "reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus." Understanding and having faith in our old sinful nature's death is crucial for overcoming sin and living in righteousness. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Paul lists various sinful lifestyles and states that such people will not inherit God's kingdom. Verse 11: "And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God." Our old sinful identities have been put to death, and we now have a new, righteous nature in Christ. Yield your body as an instrument of righteousness (Romans 6:13) rather than an instrument of sin. While we may still struggle with sin, it's no longer our true identity. Instead, we should renew our minds to our new nature in Christ and live accordingly.

As servants of righteousness, we're free to approach God boldly, even when we stumble, because our identity is secure in Christ. This new relationship empowers us to overcome sin and live out our righteous nature.

We can't be married to both our old sinful nature and Christ simultaneously - it's spiritual adultery. God killed our old man so we can be united with Jesus. Ephesians 5:25-32 highlights the relationship between husbands and wives, comparing it to Christ and the church. Verse 30 emphasizes the intimate connection to Christ, stating, "For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones."

In the tenth episode of "God Killed My Old Man," Duane Sheriff teaches the role of the law in revealing sin and our need for Christ. Understanding our new nature in Christ is crucial to overcome sin and live a victorious Christian life. Referencing Romans 7:7-12, Paul explains that the law is not sin but reveals sin. Duane uses the analogy of mud in a pond to illustrate how the law stirs up and exposes the sin already present in our hearts. In Romans 7:14-25, Paul describes the internal struggle between wanting to do good and the sinful nature. This struggle occurs when we try to live the Christian life through our efforts (the flesh) rather than relying on our new nature in Christ. Romans 8:1-4 declares that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. While we are no longer "in the flesh" (our old sinful nature), we can still choose to "walk after the flesh" instead of the Spirit. The key to victory is to walk according to the Spirit, renew our minds to our new identity in Christ, and remember God has killed our old man.
