The Gospel of Mark is set within the context of a cosmic conflict. From the very first chapter, we see the heavens being torn open and the Spirit of God descending upon Jesus, anointing and empowering him for God’s kingdom mission. From there, he is driven into the wilderness for a face-off with the Satan.
