Micah 7 ✒️ Everyone is Doing it

October 30, 2024 • Dr. Dave Burnette

1 Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.

2 The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

3 That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous desire: so they wrap it up.

4 The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity.

5 Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.

6 For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house.

7 Therefore I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

8 Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.

9 I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.

10 Then she that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her which said unto me, Where is the Lord thy God? mine eyes shall behold her: now shall she be trodden down as the mire of the streets.

11 In the day that thy walls are to be built, in that day shall the decree be far removed.

12 In that day also he shall come even to thee from Assyria, and from the fortified cities, and from the fortress even to the river, and from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.

13 Notwithstanding the land shall be desolate because of them that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings.

14 Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, which dwell solitarily in the wood, in the midst of Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.

15 According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I shew unto him marvellous things.

16 The nations shall see and be confounded at all their might: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall be deaf.

17 They shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the Lord our God, and shall fear because of thee.

18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.

19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

20 Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.

Overview: To Warn God's People of Judgement and to Repent (c 1-7)

Theme: The Trial of the People (c 6-7)

Message: God Promises Eventual Restoration (v 1-20)

Micah 7 Commentary

(7:1-4) This chapter begins in gloom and ends in hope. Micah watched as society rotted around him, Rulers demanded gifts, Judges accepted bribes, corruption was universal but God promised to lead the people out of darkness of sin and info for his light. Then the people would praise him for his faithfulness. God alone is perfectly faithful. Micah could not find an honest person anywhere in the land. Even today, real honesty is difficult to find. Society rationalizes sin, and even Christians sometimes compromise Christian principles in order to do what they want. It is easy to convince ourselves that we deserve a few breaks, especially when "everyone else" is doing it. But the standards for honesty come from God, not society, We are honest because God is truth, and we are saved, the Holy Spirit abides within us, and when we yield to the Spirit we will do His Will and be Honest too.

(7:5-6) Sin had affected the government leaders and society in general. Deceit had even ruined the family to the core of society. As a result, the only way to the left to purify the people was God's judgement. This would draw the nation back to him and restore them from the inside out.

(7:7-8) Micah showed great faith in God as he proclaimed that He would wait upon the Lord because God hears us, Micah proclaimed that the Lord would bring him through tough times, out of the darkness, and protect him from his enemies. We too can have this same relationship with the Lord to have Micah's assurance and faith to walk in victory.

(7:9) Micah realized that the people would be patient and obedient when they were being punished. God would forgive them and show his goodness again. (Lamentations 3) Punishment does not mean rejection. The nation of Judah was being punished in order to bring the people to God, not send them away from him. When you face trials because of your sin, do not be angry with the Lord or be afraid that he has rejected you, Instead turn away from your sin and turn to the Lord.

(7:18) God loves to be merciful! He does not forgive grudgingly, but is glad wen we repent and offers forgiveness to all who come back to him. Today you can confess your sins and receive his loving forgiveness. Don't be too proud to accept God's free offer.

(7:20) In the age when religion was makin little difference in people's lives, Micah said that God expected his people to be fair just, and merciful. He requires the same of Christians today, in a world that is unfair, we must act justly , in a world of pride and self-sufficiency , we must walk humbly with God. Only when we live God's way will be begin to affect our homes, our society, and our world.

LIFE APPLICATION by Dr. Dave Burnette

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue with the book of Micah with Chapter 7. In our text today we see how Micah could not find an honest man anywhere in the Land to finish the book with the Lord bringing eventual Restoration. In making application we see that honesty is hard to find as even those who claim to be Christians fail to be truthful. With the wide spread sin it is easy to fall into the trap that "Everyone is Doing it" How about you? Do you compromise on sin due to others around you? Let us learn from our text today and the warning of Micah to not compromise on sin because of others around us doing it but rather obey the Word of God because restoration is coming and the Lord is Just.
