APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;[1]
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from there he shall come to judge the [living] and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the [universal Christian Church,][2]
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

[1] Many versions of the Apostles Creed include “he descended into hell.”  It is said to have been added at the Synod of Sirmium in 359. There are many interpretations of this phrase. Since the Apostles Creed is not Scripture and functions as a summary of our beliefs, I have chosen to leave this phrase out for our purposes.

[2] Here the Creed states, “holy Catholic church.” The Creed was compiled long before there were Catholic and Protestant churches. The word “Catholic” means “universal.” The purpose of the statement is the profession of belief in all believers making up the Church (big “C”). Again, since this is not Scripture, I have replaced “holy Catholic church” with “universal Christian Church” to convey the original meaning.
