Eyes on Jesus: Foundation (Part 2)

November 17, 2019 • Ron Moore

FOUR GOALS OF OUR STUDY IN 1 CORINTHIANS PROCLAMATION AND DEMONSTRATION 1. Focus (and refocus) on Jesus. 2. Deal with issues of the “flesh.” 3. Invest and engage in meaningful relationships. 4. Share Jesus with clarity and relevance. We are made in the image of God—which means—we have communicable attributes: • God is Omnipotent. We have aspects of power. • God is Omniscient. We can learn and gain knowledge. • God is Eternal. We have a beginning but will live forever. • God is Creator. We have the capacity to create life. • God is All-Loving. We have the capacity to love. • God exists in Community (Trinity). We desire relationships. • God Communicates. We can communicate to each other. • God is Perfect. We have capacity to know right and wrong. • God is Spirit. We have this spiritual understanding. Building with the eternal material: • Word and Worship (Hebrews 10:24-25) • Acts of service (Matthew 10:42) • Honoring God through Trials (James 1:12) • Growing Deeper (Ephesians 4:11-16) • Church and Family Leadership (1 Peter 5:1-4) • Telling others about Jesus (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20) • Living with an eternal perspective (2 Tim. 4:7-8; Rev. 22:12)

FOUR GOALS OF OUR STUDY IN 1 CORINTHIANS PROCLAMATION AND DEMONSTRATION Where did I come from? (Origin) Who am I? (Identity) Why am I here? (Meaning) How should I live? (Morality) Where am I going? (Destiny) THE CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW IS CHRISTOCENTRIC - CENTERED ON JESUS. THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS BUILT ON THE FOUNDATION OF JESUS. Spiritual maturity is measured by growth as a Christian, not years as a Christian (1 Corinthians 3:1-3a). Worshiping people is false worship (1 Corinthians 3b-9). The Christian builds on the foundation of Jesus (1 Corinthians 3:10-11).

Big Questions from Corinth--How do I keep my SIN NATURE in check?

November 3, 2019 • Dave DiDonato

What are the WAYS and MOTIVATIONS for a believer to keep their sin nature in check? Sin Nature – Humanity has a natural propensity/inclination to rebel against God, hence to sin. Sin nature in check WAY #1 – Prepare our minds daily through God’s Word WAY #2 – Keep our focus on Jesus and hope in His impending return My present confidence resides in my future hope WAY #3 – In every decision choose God’s objective truth over our subjective desires Post-Truth - Objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief Sin Nature in Check MOTIVATION #1 – Our Heavenly Father calls us to model His character MOTIVATION #2 – Our Heavenly Father will hold us accountable MOTIVATION #3 – Jesus shed His precious blood for us

1. Where did I come from? (Origin) 2. Who am I? (Identity) 3. Why am I here? (Meaning) 4. How should I live? (Morality) 5. Where am I going? (Destiny) Worldviews Naturalism: I am God Secularism: I will worship myself as God. Postmodernism: You’re not the boss of me! Pantheism: May the Force be with you. Pluralism: All roads lead to God. New Spirituality: Just believe in something. Moralistic Therapeutic Deism: Be happy and kind. The Christian Worldview is Christocentric—centered on Jesus. The Christian Worldview is a demonstration of the Spirit’s power (1 Cor. 2:1-5). The Spirit opens our eyes to understand the work of Jesus (1 Cor. 2:6-10). The Spirit enables us to live out the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:11-16). Proclaiming and Demonstrating the Mind of Christ: • Loving God and others (Mark 12:30-31) • Grasping and growing in God’s revealed truth (John 15:15) • Considering others before ourselves (Phil. 2:3-8)

FOUR GOALS OF OUR STUDY IN 1 CORINTHIANS PROCLAMATION AND DEMONSTRATION Focus (and refocus) on Jesus Dealing honestly with sexual issues Engage in meaningful relationships Share Jesus with clarity and relevance 1 CORINTHIANS 1:18-31 EYES ON JESUS: SALVATION WORLDVIEW QUESTIONS: Where did you come from? (Origin) Who am I? (Identity) Why am I here? (Meaning) How should I live? (Morality) Where am I going? (Destiny) (Taken from: I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist, Geisler and Turek)  WORLDVIEWS (not an exhaustive list) NATURALISM: No God. Humans evolved from animals. Universe closed physical system. SECULARISM: Truth must be proven by science. Make the most out of life. Only the here and now. POSTMODERNISM: No objective truth or moral standards. Right and wrong determined by society. PANTHEISM: The impersonal god is one essence with the universe. PLURALISM: All religions are equally valid. There are many paths to God. MORALISTIC THERAPEUTIC DEISM: God just wants us to be happy and nice to other people. He only intervenes when we ask him. NEW SPIRITUALITY: All people pray to the same god or spirit no matter what name they use for the spiritual being. If you do good, you will receive good. If you do bad, you will receive bad. THE CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW IS CHRISTOCENTRIC—CENTERED ON JESUS. THE CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW: 5 THINGS TO “BOAST” ABOUT 1 CORINTHIANS 1:30-31 I AM “IN CHRIST.” I belong to Jesus (Jer. 43:1-3) I am a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17) JESUS IS MY “WISDOM FROM GOD” I have the “mind of Christ” (1 Cor. 2:16) I have the Holy Spirit (John 16:13)  JESUS MADE ME RIGHT BEFORE GOD  I am declared righteous (forensic righteousness) I am made righteous (imputed righteousness) The Holy Spirit allows me to live a righteous life (empowered righteousness) JESUS SET ME APART I have been set apart for a special purpose (Eph. 2:10; Jer. 29:11-13)  JESUS REDEEMED ME I have been “bought with a price” (1 Cor. 6:20; 1 Pet. 1:18-19) I have been redeemed to be “zealous for good works” (Titus 2:14)

1 Corinthians: Introduction and Overview

September 29, 2019 • Ron Moore

Overview: Proclamation and Demonstration APOSTLE’S CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;[1] the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the [living] and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the [universal Christian Church,][2] the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Four Goals for our Study in 1 Corinthians  Goal #1: Focus: Jesus Goal #2: Sexuality: Clarity. Purity. Satisfaction. Goal #3: Relationships: Engaged. Invested.  Goal #4: Sharing Jesus: Relevance   If you want to know how you can grow deeper as a believer contact Greg DeVore http://gdevore@biblechapel.org Do you have a need we can pray for? Walk alongside you? Do you know of another person who needs care? Let us know at http://caregiving@biblechapel.org   [1] Many versions of the Apostles Creed include “he descended into hell.”  It is said to have been added at the Synod of Sirmium in 359. There are many interpretations of this phrase. Since the Apostles Creed is not Scripture and functions as a summary of our beliefs, I have chosen to leave this phrase out for our purposes. [2] Here the Creed states, “holy Catholic church.” The Creed was compiled long before there were Catholic and Protestant churches. The word “Catholic” means “universal.” The purpose of the statement is the profession of belief in all believers making up the Church (big “C”). Again, since this is not Scripture, I have replaced “holy Catholic church” with “universal Christian Church” to convey the original meaning.
