The "Prosperity Gospel" has completely pervaded our society. It preaches a message so contrary to the actual message of Christ that it is a wonder how anyone could ever call the leaders who teach it Christian Leaders. However, the damage of phrases like this one is in the kernel of truth found in it. Obedience to God will always bring blessing, that is Scriptural and a promise from God who as we know is always faithful and trustworthy. The blessing though is the fact that He will come near to us...not that we will be given blessings that will be seen by the world.

The idea that whenever anyone suffers from anything must mean that they sinned is found even in Jesus' time. Unfortunately, there is nothing in Scripture that points to suffering always coming from your sin. Of course we are all sinful, but we live in a broken world where suffering is simply part. We will all suffer...do we really need to add to that suffering by making the person feel that their suffering is always a self-inflicted wound? I think this may be the phrase that causes more damage than anything else in the world that we live in. No longer in our world can anyone reproach another person. If a parent spanks a child, that's abuse. If a teacher reprimands a student, that means that the teacher failed to be open-minded. If the church speaks against the society, then the church is bigoted and unloving. How can anyone speak truth in to the world, when the truth itself is a subjective matter?
