The world is all about you taking care of yourself. This phrase is meant to tell us that we can't be lazy about our own lives. We must continue to try, but there is a theological problem with this statement…we can do nothing to help ourselves in the end. The phrase gives us more credit and more power than we could ever dream to have. Instead, Jesus teaches that we should have our eyes focused on the Kingdom...God will take care of our needs. God doesn't need our help; it is us who need His.

The idea that whenever anyone suffers from anything must mean that they sinned is found even in Jesus' time. Unfortunately, there is nothing in Scripture that points to suffering always coming from your sin. Of course we are all sinful, but we live in a broken world where suffering is simply part. We will all suffer...do we really need to add to that suffering by making the person feel that their suffering is always a self-inflicted wound? I think this may be the phrase that causes more damage than anything else in the world that we live in. No longer in our world can anyone reproach another person. If a parent spanks a child, that's abuse. If a teacher reprimands a student, that means that the teacher failed to be open-minded. If the church speaks against the society, then the church is bigoted and unloving. How can anyone speak truth in to the world, when the truth itself is a subjective matter?
