Part 2 - Hearing & Doing

September 5, 2020 • Matt Rosenberg

Israel has a unique calling from God to be a blessing to the nations. This calling is extended to all Jewish people whether they follow God or not, and it can be seen in science, mathematics, art, education and entertainment. The design, by God, is to use the Jewish people to bless the world by being a light for God to the world.

"Israel" is part 2 of the series "Hearing & Doing."

The Hebrew word "me'od" is often translated as "strength" in English translations of the Bible. A literal translation of me'od is "muchness." As we end Sukkot and this wonderful fall Holy Day season, we finish our series on the Shema with the question: what does it mean to "love God with all of our muchness?" "Strength" is part 8 of "Hearing & Doing."

Nephesh, in Hebrew, is often translated as "soul" in English translations of the Bible going back to the King James Version in 1611. Nephesh doesn't really mean "soul" but rather literally "throat," and actually refers to our "being" in connection to our physical bodies. As we begin Sukkot we ask the question: what does it mean to "love God with all of our soul?" "Soul" is part 7 of "Hearing & Doing"
