Day 7 - Lament

January 7, 2024 • Stephanie Andrews • Psalm 71:18, 2 Corinthians 4:16–17

The prayer type today is lament, and the prompt is for those in legacy stage of life. We will use the prayer of lament as we encourage seasoned believers to keep serving God, no matter the circumstances.

Remember that lament is an honest place and a way to bring our real hearts to God. In later seasons of life, it may be easier to focus on what we can no longer do instead of what we are still called to do. Sometimes growing older brings challenging feelings and new ways of seeing yourself and your life. Here are a few:

·      The body ages. All that comes with this reality.

·      After years of giving, some may be tempted to believe they get to receive now.

·      Sometimes as we get older, we feel less useful and may give away our purpose to younger people.

·      False mindsets can occur. Here’s one: “Our best days were in the past.”

·      Life can take its toll, and some would prefer just to rest and do their own thing.

Enter into a time of lament on behalf of those in the legacy stage of life. Specifically bring to mind those that you know personally and ask God to comfort their places of pain and fear. If you are in the legacy season, it’s ok to be honest about how you feel. Naming and experiencing your painful places is part of the process of healing.

True Biblical lament, however, always ends in praise. Begin to turn your prayer towards hope as you pray the following Scriptures for those same people to remember the truth and the purpose of their season.

“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” (Psalm 71:18)

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary afflictions are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2 Cor 4:16-17).
