Sermon Title: “An Unscheduled Revival” (Pastor Bob)

Summary:

Are revivals scheduled? We may think so when seeing a church sign exclaiming, “Revival Services This Week.” What is revival? Is it a time of refreshing from the presence of the Lord? “Isn’t it when God causes the normal ministry of the gospel to surge forward with extraordinary spiritual power (Raymond Ortlund Jr.)?” How does any Christian or church maintain ongoing revival? They must be empowered by hope, marked by trust, inclusive of all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the way God’s people ought to be, but often are not. They are often led in churches by self-seeking leaders being made up of those who believe and those who only pretend to believe. God values a heart for Christ; for it defines spiritual authenticity. God’s covenant with us is marital in nature. His love is a jealous love. We commit spiritual adultery when we act as if God and His love is not enough for us. God dwells not just in a high and holy place but also in the hearts of the humble. Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. He opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Sermon Title: “The Power of God’s Love" (Pastor Bob) Summary: Who is the most loving person you know? Why do you view them that way? Is it because they love you despite how much you have sinned against them? We think God shows his greatest power in the destruction and punishment of the wicked. His greatest power is seen in taking the wickedness of this world on His shoulders and giving back love. Isaiah in this text answers the question, “How can the gracious promises of God come true for guilty people?” (Raymond Ortlund Jr.). Isaiah tells us this Servant of the Lord, though marred beyond recognition, rejected by people, and died innocent of any crime, was also our sin-bearer. It may have been a human plot to kill him, but going to the cross for our sins was also a divine strategy. His death produced life in us. How and what did Jesus feel about the Father’s plan? Isaiah 53:11 says: “Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities."

Sermon Title: "Suffer Well and Bless Others" (Jim Womer) Summary: In this passage of Scripture Peter is writing to the persecuted church in Asia Minor and lists qualities that should characterize the way they lived their lives as they suffered. In the midst of their suffering, they were to have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Peter’s instructions to the church are foreign to a world that believes that we should take it upon ourself to right the wrongs that have been done to us. The world says that if you get hit, you have to hit back harder to make sure it doesn’t happen again. How can Christians bless those who persecute us? We are to remember that the eyes of the Lord are on his people and his ears are open to our cries. When we trust that the Lord sees our suffering and hears our petitions, we are free to let him right the wrongs done to us. The gospel not only transforms our relationship to the world, but also those in the church. If we are able to bless those who persecute us, how much more so should we be able to bless our brothers and sisters in our church family when they hurt us.
