Sermon Title: “The Power of God’s Love" (Pastor Bob) Summary: Who is the most loving person you know? Why do you view them that way? Is it because they love you despite how much you have sinned against them? We think God shows his greatest power in the destruction and punishment of the wicked. His greatest power is seen in taking the wickedness of this world on His shoulders and giving back love. Isaiah in this text answers the question, “How can the gracious promises of God come true for guilty people?” (Raymond Ortlund Jr.). Isaiah tells us this Servant of the Lord, though marred beyond recognition, rejected by people, and died innocent of any crime, was also our sin-bearer. It may have been a human plot to kill him, but going to the cross for our sins was also a divine strategy. His death produced life in us. How and what did Jesus feel about the Father’s plan? Isaiah 53:11 says: “Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities."

Sermon Title: "Suffer Well and Bless Others" (Jim Womer) Summary: In this passage of Scripture Peter is writing to the persecuted church in Asia Minor and lists qualities that should characterize the way they lived their lives as they suffered. In the midst of their suffering, they were to have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Peter’s instructions to the church are foreign to a world that believes that we should take it upon ourself to right the wrongs that have been done to us. The world says that if you get hit, you have to hit back harder to make sure it doesn’t happen again. How can Christians bless those who persecute us? We are to remember that the eyes of the Lord are on his people and his ears are open to our cries. When we trust that the Lord sees our suffering and hears our petitions, we are free to let him right the wrongs done to us. The gospel not only transforms our relationship to the world, but also those in the church. If we are able to bless those who persecute us, how much more so should we be able to bless our brothers and sisters in our church family when they hurt us.

Sermon Title: “Holy Joy for Bad People” (Pastor Bob) Summary: How are the redeemed supposed to respond when hearing their sins are forgiven? “Break forth into singing and cry aloud!” Isn’t the Gospel good news? Doesn’t good news make us happy? What we believe is summarized in the church’s creed, but it is also seen in joyful worship. Why are we so joyful? It is because God’s grace has caused such great reversals. Isaiah uses three images to help us know how to rejoice over God’s grace. It is like a barren woman who now has a growing family, like a lonely wife comforted by her loving husband, a poor city beautified by costly jewels. God’s word is effective. It changes people, situations, and societies. Because the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, died for us, and rose again and is coming again, a renewed world awaits us. Why wouldn’t any true believer not rejoice and keep on rejoicing?
