How Did They Miss Him?

Fall 2022 Sunday Class @ Cornerstone

Week 13 | What If We Miss Him

November 27, 2022 • Kody Pritt

Now as we wrap up this study, we turn the focus to us. Could we miss Him? The answer is yes if we refuse to bend our hearts toward God. The same problems that confronted the Jews of the first century also stand before us. Stubborn arrogance and pride can derail our spiritual life. Selfishness can challenge Jesus’ authority over our life. Earthly focus can blind us to spiritual realities. And finally, a lack of commitment and perseverance can get us off track to where we too could miss Jesus.

Week 12 | The Pharisees

November 20, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Matthew 23

With their emphasis on the Law, and the constant reading of the Old Testament, the scribes and Pharisees should have been among the first to recognize Jesus. Instead, their great desire for Jewish independence, freedom from the Romans, and lust for power and position caused them to miss Jesus.

Week 11 | The Crowd of Judea

November 13, 2022 • Kody Pritt, Kevin Shanesy • Matthew 21:1–13

Why have a triumphal procession? Jesus knows his earthly ministry is ending … within days his earthly life will end on a cross, finishing the mission God gave him to do. For Him, nothing remains except the final act – being the sacrificial lamb of God – who would take away the sins of the world, John 1.29.

Week 10 | Judas

November 6, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Matthew 26:21–25

Perhaps no other name has been more synonymous with deceit, treachery, and betrayal than Judas. I’ve never met a person named Judas, have you? Forever his name will be associated with his interactions with Jesus that led to Jesus’ arrest, mock-trial, and execution on a cross.

Week 9 | Thomas

October 30, 2022 • Kody Pritt • John 20:24–29

Now … standing there seeing Jesus, the Jesus, Thomas the skeptic is astonished at the sight. In his words we see the highest adoration and devotion. Jesus is the God who goes to the cross. He was wounded for our sins and iniquities. What happened on the cross was now beginning to look different. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Week 8 | The Crowds of John 6

October 23, 2022 • Kody Pritt, Kevin Shanesy • John 6:36–68

Peter and the rest of the 12 understood that Jesus provides the ultimate satisfaction for the soul. Jesus is the only thing that will bring your soul peace. If you want heaven, you must eat the bread of life. Will you believe?

Week 7 | Nicodemus

October 16, 2022 • Kody Pritt • John 3:1–12

What will we do with Jesus? At some point in life, every person will be confronted with the reality of their sin and the weight of their guilt. Some will seek a remedy through works of personal righteousness … trying to move the scale closer to their side through their own efforts. Others will humble themselves and throw themselves down at the foot of the cross. Realizing they have absolutely nothing to bring, they will cast their heart before the Lord and call upon Him. Turning from their sin, they will surrender to His Lordship, confess His name, and be baptized … allowing the Spirit to take up residence in their heart for the purpose of transformation. It is to these who salvation is promised.

Week 6 | John the Baptist

October 9, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Matthew 11:2–15

Even when we doubt Him, God remains faithful to us. Because of that, we can go to Him even when we doubt. It is only by going to Him as John did can our doubts be relieved.

Week 5 | Those Who Didn't Miss Him

October 2, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Luke 2

This lesson will look at those who Luke describes in chapter 2 as looking forward to Israel’s consolation, 2.25, and those who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem, 2.38. We will read about the shepherds around Bethlehem who received an angelic visit and revelation. We’ll meet Simeon and Anna, who were looking forward to the day the Messiah would come.

Week 4 | The Christ in Prophecy 3

September 25, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Psalm 110:1, Psalm 2:7

From cover to cover, one can trace the developing message of the coming Savior through every book of the Old Testament. We see images of the Anointed, the Seed of David, the suffering Servant, and the Prince of Peace. This lesson will examine the glimpses of our Savior inside the book of Psalms.

Week 3 | The Christ in Prophecy 2

September 18, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Matthew 2

Matthew 2 contains 4 prophecies that we often pass over. All of them have to do with location: Bethlehem, Egypt, Rama, and Nazareth. The prophets Micah, Hosea, Jeremiah, and others all tie Jesus of Nazareth to these specific locations. It is far from a coincidence. It is all the work of God and is more than enough proof to connect Jesus as the Messiah.

Week 2 | The Christ in Prophecy 1

September 11, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Matthew 1:23, Isaiah 7:14

Week 1 | The Importance of This Study

September 4, 2022 • Kody Pritt • Matthew 15:3–9

Jesus was steadfastly and unapologetically rejected by the vast majority of the Jews of His day. And even now, with the vast array of biblical evidence preserved for us in the completed revelation, the testimony of extra-biblical sources who validate the historicity of Jesus, and the decisive impact of His teachings on the entire world for the last two thousand years people still reject Him.
