The pessimistic disciple...

Now … standing there seeing Jesus, the Jesus, Thomas the skeptic is astonished at the sight. In his words we see the highest adoration and devotion. Jesus is the God who goes to the cross. He was wounded for our sins and iniquities. What happened on the cross was now beginning to look different. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Week 13 | What If We Miss Him

Now as we wrap up this study, we turn the focus to us. Could we miss Him? The answer is yes if we refuse to bend our hearts toward God. The same problems that confronted the Jews of the first century also stand before us. Stubborn arrogance and pride can derail our spiritual life. Selfishness can challenge Jesus’ authority over our life. Earthly focus can blind us to spiritual realities. And finally, a lack of commitment and perseverance can get us off track to where we too could miss Jesus.

Week 12 | The Pharisees

With their emphasis on the Law, and the constant reading of the Old Testament, the scribes and Pharisees should have been among the first to recognize Jesus. Instead, their great desire for Jewish independence, freedom from the Romans, and lust for power and position caused them to miss Jesus.

Week 11 | The Crowd of Judea

Why have a triumphal procession? Jesus knows his earthly ministry is ending … within days his earthly life will end on a cross, finishing the mission God gave him to do. For Him, nothing remains except the final act – being the sacrificial lamb of God – who would take away the sins of the world, John 1.29.
