Rest from Multi-Tasking - North Oak

Multi-tasking is the drive to be more than who we are, to control more than we do, to extend our power and our effectiveness. This practice leads to a divided self, with full attention given to nothing. The prophet Amos speaks to the drive to be more than who we are by speaking out to the children of Israel who weren’t fully taking rest, they were multi-tasking attempting to rest and plan for when they could make a profit at the same time. They’re attention was divided.

The message of consumerism is we should always be producing more and more, and there is nothing wrong with this message. God produced and created everything around us…thankfully God didn’t stop God’s creation on day five, or we wouldn’t be here. The problem for many of us is we struggle to rest from producing. Through the story of the Israelites, God gives us a pattern for producing and resting.

A lot of the things we are looking for, when we are running around filling up our schedules and trying to accomplish goals, we are actually looking for things that God wants to give us. But in order for God to be able to give those things to us, we have to stop. We have to pause and take a deep breath so we can find what we are looking for. Sabbath takes us from being worn out, burned out, frazzled, disconnected, wandering people and recreates us every week into people who are energized and thoughtful and connected and imaginative, and ready.

Anxious thoughts can pop up at any time in our lives. Maybe you have deadline pressures at work, your relationships are getting complicated, or you are struggling in school. Any one of these can lead us to anxious thoughts, but all of them combined can push us past our limits. How can we not let our anxious thoughts consume us, and how can we rest from them? Jesus invites us to place our anxious thoughts on him and to rest from them.
