Radical Misfits

A Misfit Community

July 24, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 5:1–11

"Church" What comes to mind when you hear that word? For most of us what comes to mind is a schedule, a place to go, and a duty to fulfill each week (or maybe twice a year). Yet to the misfits of this world (Christians), the church is a community that is much bigger than what we normally consider. Join us this week as we wrap up our study on 1 Peter, and as we celebrate the God of the church and what He has given us.

Radical Expressions

June 5, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 3:8–12

What comes first, the chicken or the egg? And when we are Christians, is it our behavior and ethics, or our heart changing what it loves? Being a misfit in this world means the conditions of our hearts may find radical expression in the way we live and love. Join us as we explore the way our faith and hope is expressed in the things we love.

Welcome Home, Misfits

June 26, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 4:7–19

All of us want a place in this world to call "home". We want a place where we are loved, heard, understood and where we are not just taking, but giving as well. And when life is tough or we are unfairly put on the spot we want to know that home is safe and that we can find solidarity with that family and community. Join us this week as we explore the home we are given in what is sometimes a hostile world. And celebrate with us the God who gave it to us, and made it the great place it can be.

A Radical Contest

June 12, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 3:13–22

Like a sports team, the church is a team of people pursuing common goals and adopting common lifestyles in that pursuit. Unlike a sports team the church is composed of all shapes and sizes, ages and genders of people. But in the game together we share the outcome (winning). But we don't all share the same experience. Some are injured, some not. Some are exhausted, some sat on the bench. But our leader, Jesus, assures us of winning and a dinner at his table that is beyond imagination. He suffered every injury in bringing our team to the winners' circle and for Him, we experience whatever the contest brings.

The Misfit's Focus

June 19, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 4:1–6

One of the things the Church struggles with is engaging the culture around us in a way that is clear and accurate. The Church is often tempted to compromise its message, to yield to the culturally acceptable or politically correct, or to simply gloss over those things in the Christian tradition that may be distasteful to others. But being a misfit in this world means that our focus is on one thing, while the culture's focus is on something else. Join us this week as we consider the Misfit focus, and how it leads us to engage the culture for Christ.

The Misfit Family

May 29, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 3:1–7

‘Submit’ – a word that either brings to mind pictures of people wrestling until one taps out, or a word that brings to mind the heartless oppression of one person against another. This is not a word that we normally associate with marital bliss. Yet Peter tells us it is an attitude of men and women towards each other that makes misfit families work. Join us as we explore the misfit family in God’s world.

Becoming Radical

May 15, 2022 • Mike Waldrop

To many church people the feeling of being a misfit is familiar. Church people have an understanding that their values, morals and beliefs may be and at times, are clearly different from the people around them. What we struggle with is the idea that our misfit beliefs are to result in a radically different lifestyle. Join us this week as we begin to unpack what that means. We have what it takes to be a radical misfit, but do we have the will?

The Church of the Misfit Saint

May 8, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 1:13—2:10

Sometimes church people feel like misfits because we think the culture is out to get us, the government has left us behind, and we have long ago lost confidence in the morals and values of the people around us. But is that what makes us misfits? Is it our morals, values and behavior? Join us Sunday as we consider what truly makes us misfits, and how that status can make life great!

Made a Misfit

May 1, 2022 • Mike Waldrop • 1 Peter 1:1–12

Most of us have a deep desire to belong, to be accepted and loved, and to not be the objects of criticism or ridicule. And pursuing this desire sometimes gets us in trouble. Join us as we consider where we fit and where we don’t. And celebrate with us the privilege of being a misfit in this world.
