The Promise of Hope

Power in the Presence! - The Promise of Hope - Part 3

April 28, 2024 • Steve Hinton • John 15:1–5, Jeremiah 2:21–22, Revelation 20:14–15, Matthew 7:22–23, 2 Corinthians 5:17

John 15:1-5 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.   Jeremiah 2:21-22 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? 22 Although you wash yourself with soap and use an abundance of cleansing powder,   the stain of your guilt is still before me,” declares the Sovereign Lord.    John 15:6 If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.   Revelation 20:14-15 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.   Matthew 7:22-23 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’   2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose   John 15:7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.   John 15:10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.   Galatians 5:22-23a But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.   2 Corinthians 5:20a We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

Hope from the Helper!

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.”    John 14:16   “Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?”   1 Corinthians. 3:16   Acts 9:31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.    A. The Person of the Holy Spirit.    “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”   John 16:13-14   But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit.” Acts 5:3   B. The Characteristics of the Holy Spirit.    Ephesians 4:30 “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit . . .”   John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. Matthew 10:19-20 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Acts 8:29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.”   C. The Reception of the Holy Spirit.   Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.   Acts 15:7-8 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.   Acts 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders.”    D. The Walk with the Holy Spirit.      Acts 5:32 And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”   Galatians 5:22-23a But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. John 4: 24 “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Part 1 John 14-17   John 14:1-3 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”   John 12:27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.   You Can Live With Hope When You Transition from a Heart of Trouble to a Heart of Trust.  1. The Person of Jesus   John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”   2. The Promise of Jesus   Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.   1 Corinthians 2:9 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.”   John 16:6-7 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.   3. The Path with Jesus   Vs 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.   John 18:37-38 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose, I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.   Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.   Psalm 77:11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.   Psalm 42:5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?
