Jacob did as he was told and received the blessing from Isaac. Rebekah influenced Isaac to forbid Jacob to marry a Canaanite woman. Isaac sent Jacob to search for a wife among Rebekah’s kinsmen. Jacob journeyed to Haran as he was directed by his father. He stopped to rest in Luz. The Lord spoke to Jacob in a dream and told him He would honor his promise to bless Abraham’s descendants and make his name great. Jacob committed to follow God if He brought him back safely to his father’s land. He named the place Bethel. He referred to this place as God’s house.

Jacob (Israel) left Canaan with all his household and journeyed to Egypt. He offered sacrifices to God in Beersheba. God spoke to Jacob in a dream and reminded him of the promise He made to Jacob. God told Jacob that He would bring his people back to the land He promised. Pharaoh told Joseph to offer his family the best land in Goshen to tend their flocks. Jacob gave Pharaoh a blessing. The people of Egypt and Canaan gave all their money, their livestock, and their land for food during the famine. They eventually offered themselves in servitude to Pharaoh for food. The priests were the only exception because they were provided a portion of food from Pharaoh. Jacob made Joseph promise to bury him outside of Egypt with his fathers.

Day 26 - Read Genesis 44-45

May 19, 2024 • Genesis 44—45

Joseph tested his brothers by setting them up to defend Benjamin. The brothers returned to Joseph and bowed before him. They asked Joseph to allow Benjamin to return to his father and take them as servants in his place. They feared their father Jacob would die if Benjamin did not return to him. Joseph sent everyone away except his brothers, and he told them who he was. Joseph told his brothers not to be upset at themselves because it was God’s will that he be taken to Egypt to preserve their lives. Joseph celebrated with his brothers, then sent them to get their father. Pharaoh promised them all they needed in the land of Egypt, and they were given the necessary supplies to travel to Canaan to get their father and return to Egypt.

Day 25 - Read Genesis 42-43

May 18, 2024 • Genesis 42—43

Jacob sent his ten oldest sons to Egypt to buy grain. When they arrived, they bowed before Joseph, but did not recognize him. They asked to buy grain. Joseph required one brother to stay and the others to return with Benjamin. Benjamin was Joseph’s only full brother (sons of Jacob and Rachel). Joseph gave them grain, but had the money placed back in their bags to test them. When they returned home, their father feared sending them back with Benjamin, but he eventually agreed. When they returned to Egypt, Joseph sent them to his home where he had a meal prepared. They explained they found the money in their bags. Joseph comforted them and provided them with the meal. Benjamin received five times the food as his brothers.
