Attitudes, pertaining to maintaining peace, safety, the people’s ability to enjoy the bounties of YeHoVaH’s deliverance from Egypt, and their prosperity in the Promised Land is at the forefront of this extraordinary Chapter. In Israel’s preparation for going to war against their enemies, certain Instructions of exclusions were given to certain individuals in certain categories based on YeHoVaH’s Promises.

Murder, Marriage, Sons and Death

YeHoVaH’s Laws are Commandments of compassion that addressed various aspects and the conduct of community life for the nation maintaining justice, assuring that lawbreakers were punished and that those obedient to His Law prospered. In this portion of Deuteronomy, YeHoVaH gives Instructions for atoning for unsolved murder and marrying foreign women captured in war. Further Instructions are given for dealing with the firstborn sons of a polygamous marriage and the stubborn and rebellious son who disobeys his parents. The Chapter concludes with rules pertaining to death by hanging.

YeHoVaH established the holy nation of Israel to be a just society with righteous decrees and Laws that set them apart from all other nations. To maintain Israel as a just society, enforcing the Laws was paramount to assure that those who violated the Law were punished accordingly and those who obeyed the Law were protected. Embedded in the Law of YeHoVaH were provisions for accidental crimes or unintentional violations and how to handle those matters justly. This passage deals with such a matter.

The Day of Thanksgiving and the Bible

For many Americans, Thanksgiving is a special beloved holiday. Both the religious communities and non-religious communities celebrate the day of Thanksgiving which generates debate over its religious associations. However, for others, the celebration is deeply controversial. Thanksgiving has a contentious history that goes far beyond when the first feast was held. Like Columbus Day, the holiday is viewed by many to be a celebration of the conquest of Native Americans by colonists. Thanksgiving is considered by some to be a national day of mourning. Biblically, there are Holy Days that are to be observed which were given to us by YeHoVaH through Moses. If one chooses to celebrate Thanksgiving, do so knowing it is not Biblically mandated or required by YeHoVaH. Get the FACTS about Thanksgiving in this teaching.
