Shine: the Book of Philippians - September 4, 2022

September 4, 2022 • Colby Dorcely • Philippians 1:9–11

In the first chapter of Philippians, after Paul has begun the letter with a greeting, he then transitions into a prayer over the church of Philippi starting in verse 9. Paul prays that the church's love for one another and for Christ to "abound more and more," but he also prays that their love would be linked to their knowledge, wisdom, and insight. In our culture, we love to talk about loving others, but the Bible calls us to a deeper love. One that is not rooted in feelings, but is rooted in truth, wisdom, and Jesus himself.

Shine: The Book of Philippians - August 28, 2022

August 28, 2022 • Brock Tharpe • Philippians 1:18–30, Philippians 1:21

Philippians 1 contains some of the most amazing words of scripture in the entire Bible. One of the standout moments is when Paul says in verse 21, "For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." These words are beautiful, but they take on a whole new weight when you consider that Paul was imprisoned and looking at the potential of his own execution. Even then, he maintains a perspective that seems completely foreign to us. Either way, he wins. Either he gets to be with Jesus, or he gets to walk further in the purpose that God has laid out for him. Many of us don't see things that way. Many of us see our salvation as a finish line, but Paul sees it as a starting line. We are not saved from something, rather, we are saved for something.

In this second sermon on the book of Philippians, Brock digs in to what it is that binds the church together in unity. While all sorts of differences in thought, opinion, culture, and experience threaten to cause quarrels to divide us, we as the church are bound to one another by the shared gift of grace, the shared goal of the gospel, and by the consuming fire that is our God.

Shine: The Book of Philippians - August 14, 2022

August 14, 2022 • Brock Tharpe • Philippians 1:3–7, Philippians 2:14–15

In Philippians chapter two, verses 14 and 15, Paul tells the church to "Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world." Looking at the world around us, it is easy to see that in relation to those verses, the world is doing its part. We see grumbling, disputing all around us. Crooked and twisted hearts abound. The question is, where are the people of God, who are meant to "Shine" like stars in the darkness. In this opening message from our sermon series on the Book of Philippians, Brock begins with Paul's opening to the church at Philippi, highlighting Paul's infectious and unbreakable joy in the middle of his imprisonment, and how we are called to a joy that is the same.
