One of Pastor Ian's most favorite ways to describe a Sunday service is, “The Great Drama of Worship,” and like some of my favorite productions, Christian worship is a musical! Unlike practically any other public gathering, a worship service is a place where it is not only normal for people to burst out in song, it’s expected that everyone in the room sings along. In both the Jewish and the Christian Bibles, a whole book is taken up by just songs and poems (The Psalms) which have been sung, chanted, and re-written into songs & hymns for the last 3000 years. So, this Sunday, we ask and answer the question, “Why Do We Sing In Christian Worship?”

Our summer Why In The Worship? sermon series comes to a close this week as we reach the last part of a Christian worship service: the Benediction & Sending Forth. We know every service will end eventually, but Christians tend to make it a production. Everyone stands up, the Pastor dares to speak in the name of God himself to bless those present, and then instead of just saying the service is over, the Pastor tells everyone to leave: ‘Depart in peace!’ This is our final question of the summer: Why Do We Get Sent Forth?

We have learned a lot over the last 6 weeks about what it means to worship and why we do what we do. This Sunday we bring all of that together in a special celebration of Holy Communion! All three services on Sunday will be “Guided Services” which means we will take dedicated time to remind ourselves why we do each part of service and the way the service fits together as a whole. This is the perfect Sunday to invite someone new to church who may be unfamiliar with Christian worship - we’ll explain it all! As we celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion at all three services, our focus question this week is, “Why Do We Celebrate The Sacraments?" Last week we learned about singing in Church, something we do in worship that is strange compared to the rest of life; this week we go to the opposite end of the spectrum - Prayer! Prayer is something we are supposed to do every day, all throughout the day. St. Paul told us to pray without ceasing, making prayer something we can do anywhere and at any time - even silently! So, today in worship we ask the question, “Why do we pray in Church.”
