Global Workers of the Week

The Humphreys in Japan

September 1, 2024

Alex and Kathryn were both called into missions at a young age, and have been serving in Japan since 2006. They were site pastors for Tokyo City Church, but just transitioned into two new positions. First, they were requested to lead training for new incoming missionaries. For many years all training was done in the USA, but starting this fall, a large portion of the training will be done at the regional level. There is a lot of work to develop and implement a new curriculum.

Shortly after taking on that responsibility, a different couple stepped down from the role of area director. Alex and Kathryn were asked to step into that role of leading 100+ missionaries in Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan. This was not something they sought, but they are honored to be asked to serve. After much praying, fasting and seeking wisdom from mentors, they accepted.

In addition, Kathryn continues to direct the women’s committee of the Tokyo area churches. This group hosted their first district-level conference in June. Many churches pulled together with talents such as worship, organization, decorating and food. The event was well received and may become an annual opportunity for Japanese women to bring non believing friends.

Please pray for:

-Wisdom, humility, discernment, strength and financial provision in their new role as area directors.

-The start of the new on-field training program for all new personnel in Japan.

-Isabella and Gabriella's new school year. Isabella starts high school and Gabriella is in seventh grade.

-Ongoing ministry with various Japanese churches.

Did you know that Japan is a part of the Buddhist world? They are not "card carrying" Buddhists like you might find in Thailand or Cambodia, but they have a Buddhist worldview. Buddhism is one of the major world religions (the others are Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism). Missionaries working in the Buddhist world have found they need more prayer to accomplish their goals.
