There might not be a word more used in Christianity, that is equally used as much in the secular world, as the word “redeem.” True, we may see or hear the word redemptive, redemption, or redeeming more often from the pulpit than it’s root word, but could the meaning be essentially the same as redeeming a gift card or code?

As we draw near to the conclusion of our series “Next | New | Now,” we study the science of grace from a technical standpoint. Why does this word “redeem” play center stage of the Gospel?

“You can’t take it with you” is a commonly used phrase to encourage people to enjoy life, and not be concerned about what they do or don’t have—especially money—because once they're gone, they can't take it with them. Jesus appears to encourage this sentiment by telling us to “lay [our] treasures in heaven” instead of here on earth where they can be stolen or destroyed. But what if you could take it with you? Elisha seems to have cracked the code because for his greatest miracle, he does something that no living being had ever done before—literally! In fact, he wasn’t even alive to see the miracle.
