Treasure That Dominates Our Heart

Jesus offers himself to us as the food that is eternal. No amount of working for God can get us to eternity. He is free. He does the work needed on the cross. All we can do is eat, or, believe, and live. And this becomes the treasure that dominates our heart, Jesus. He changes everything.

Bread in the Boat

John tells this short story of Jesus’ walking on the water to clarify something in the story about the loaves and fish. Jesus does another miracle but it is for His disciples. He shows them that in the dark, in the storm will He walk on water to be with them. And when they take Him into their boat, they feel secure and at peace.

Trying to Feed on the Wrong Thing

This is a taste of the power in the resurrection. The implications are huge for the diseases and disabilities that we deal with all the time. Jesus walked into a huge group of debilitated people and heals one man — just one. And disappears before that man can know who He was. He leaves hundreds behind unhealed. Then he finds the man in a less conspicuous place and puts all the focus on holiness. Wow!

Onward to Galilee

John is showing us the greatness of Christ through an astonishing miracle. He does this by showing us the kinds of things that keep people from honoring Christ. What can keep us from seeing Jesus is the pride of attachment to someone special, a sense of entitlement, and an over-familiarity with Jesus. The miracle tells us that Jesus is gracious, that Jesus is powerful.

Let Me Tell You Everything!

Jesus says to woman at the well in John 4:26, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.” He is saying it to us as if he were standing here in the flesh, “I am the living water you were designed to drink. I am the prophet who knows everything about you and still wants you. I am the Savior who has come into the world and died for your sin to make true worship possible for you. You ask about the coming Messiah.… Let me tell you everything!"

I Am Food, I Am Life

John tells the rest of this story about the woman at the well. He deals with what happens to the woman and the town of Sychar in two parts at the beginning and the end of this story. In the middle, he gives us the words of Jesus to his disciples that explain what is happening with the woman and the town.

Jesus is After You

Jesus is revealing his greatness, and we learn about ourselves from the woman at the well. What we learn about ourselves is why our understanding and love for Jesus are so small most of the time. Jesus exposes our sin to help us see our enormous need, and how he alone can meet it.
