Lesson Seven: Live Like You Have Been Reconciled!

📖 Primary Text: : 2 Corinthians 5:18-20; Colossians 1:21-22

Key thought: He showed us through His Son how badly He wanted a relationship with us, now we need to show Him how badly we want a relationship with Him.

Reconciliation - is the restoration of a broken relationship, primarily between humanity and God, and secondarily between people

Greek definition: katallassō (καταλλάσσω) = “to change, to exchange hostility for friendship.

Through the cross, God exchanged our enmity(hostility, animosity) for peace.

This is our position — the legal standing of peace with God (Rom. 5:1).

We are no longer estranged or cut off because of what Christ did on the cross!

God reconciled us back to: Most importantly, Himself!

Purpose - The first thing He gave Adam was work- to dress and keep, what He created. Adam did not have to sweat to get the ground to yield what it was supposed to yield. It makes sense why the first thing we want to know when we get saved is what is my purpose. It’s something that we inherited from the 1st Adam. Gen. 2:15

Dominion and authority - Adam named the animals - He gave dominion over the animals Gen. 1:28

Eternal life - when they fell, He removed them from the garden away from the tree of life- Gen. 3:24

Reconciliation restores/repairs our relationship- Forgiveness takes one, reconciliation takes two to participate in the restoration of the relationship.

1. He reconciled us instantly through the work of the cross, but we have to participate in the reconciliation. We have to want to repair and restore the relationship and we do that through fellowship.

2. Reconciliation gives us access; sanctification teaches us how to dwell there.

Sanctification refines the relationship- As we yield, we experience the peace and intimacy that reconciliation made possible.

1. As we are spending time with Him, we are being sanctified. It’s the equivalent of getting to know someone all over again, after either not being around them for a while, or for whatever reason there was a betrayal in the relationship.

2. Sanctification conforms us to His image so that reconciliation isn’t just positional but visible — others see through us the reality of peace with God.

The question is, have we done and are we doing our part to restore/repair the relationship? How often are we in our word? How often are we praying? How often are we just in His presence?

He has called us to be ambassadors- act as a representative: 2 Corinthians 5:20

Because we understand that we have been reconciled it is our responsibility to share with others how what Christ did on the cross reconciled us back to God. We do a great job of inviting people to church but we don’t do a great job of inviting others back into relationship with God.

What does an ambassador do? An ambassador is a high-ranking official who represents their government in another country or before an international organization. They are authorized to conduct negotiations, promote relationships, and act as a liaison between their country and the host country or organization.

Because you and I have a relationship, we should be an ambassador for the Kingdom and promote our relationship in such a way, that others want that same level of relationship with the Father.

Though we are positionally reconciled, our minds must be renewed to think like reconciled sons and daughters (Rom. 12:2).

What God desired through the work of the cross was for us to not just have a relationship but to fellowship with Him.

He reconciled us to have fellowship!
