I grew up in church hearing that I was supposed to help take care of the poor, but I remember thinking, “I am the poor.” Anyone relate? It is difficult when you want to help people, but you always feel like you are the one needing help. The truth is most of us have been raised to believe for the worst. That everything could run out at any time, and we might not be able to survive, this is the furthest thing from what God wants for us. During the bible times to be poor was often viewed as some type of curse. So why is it that we struggle with the idea that we are supposed to prosper in this life? I know part of it is because there have been abuses in the body of Christ where people use prosperity for their own personal gain and status. But do we ignore what the Bible teaches us because of a few idiots?

My concern is not that you have tons of money or that you get to drive the nicest cars. My concern is that you have traded a life of blessings for a life of poverty. Many Christians I know walk around with a poverty mindset, and unfortunately, religion has almost made poverty a badge of honor.

Poverty is not a financial status. I know that some of you think you are in poverty because of a lack of money. While that can be a byproduct of poverty, I know people that have plenty of money but still have a poverty mindset. A poverty mindset is not a financial status but it is a belief and behavior. Your belief leads to a behavior which in turn, brings about your current status in life.

When dealing with finances, you first need to challenge yourself to see if you have a poverty mindset. Here are a few things that accompany a poverty mindset:

You cannot believe that God really wants to bless you

You get jealous when others are blessed with money or physical things

You are critical of those who teach and preach prosperity

You go to bed worrying about money many nights

You pray and ask God for just enough provision that you and your family won’t starve

If you relate to any of these statements, you need a renewed mind not just on prosperity but on who your provider is before we talk about finances any further. Here are a few scriptures to remind you what God wants for your life.

1 Corinthians 2:9 says: “But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’”

James 1:17 says: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

Psalm 51:12 says: “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit.“

In John 10:10, Jesus says, “The thief does not come except to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.”

And how about Deuteronomy 28:11-13 “And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.”

Read through all of the above scriptures at least three times and ask God to reveal any area of your life that may be influenced by a poverty mentality.
