Why does God Sanction Killing in the Old Testament?

One of the most common objections to faith in the God of the Bible is God’s sanctioned killing of the inhabitants of Canaan known as the conquest of the Promised Land. How can a God of love command and even lead his people to completely destroy others? And doesn’t this seem to justify war and other evil atrocities done in God’s name today?
