(Part 8) "Physical training is good, but..."

“If we were to put as much energy into our spiritual life as an athlete does into their training for a temporary competition, we will grow and accomplish much for God and His Kingdom.” After our sermon a couple weeks ago about “going deeper”, there was an evident need for a series on 1 Timothy chapter 4 on how to practically “go deeper” and have a foundational Christ-like mindset through the Biblical Christian habits that Paul instructed to Timothy as he trained him up to have a Christ minded ministry. The goal in this series is to understand the “Godly Values” that Paul gives to Timothy as we try to continue to shape that same Christ-like mindset in our own lives as we chose to have a deep relationship with God today. A great American Evangelist of the 1800s, Charles Finney use to preach on this scripture to Pastors and Preachers and titled his sermon: “Preacher, Save Thyself!” I believe that as we look at Christianity in the world today that I can preach a similar sermon as we look at God's Word this morning on “Christians, Save Yourselves!”. This sermon is needed today because when you look at Christianity today, it does not any longer line up with our doctrine. Moral problems, Idolatry, consumerism, complacent christianity and other unbiblical conduct has destroyed the church and Gods Servants. We need to take spiritual inventory of our lives. Paul gives a very similar warning to the Elders of Ephesus, that leads us to look at what happened in that church in its letter from John in Revelation. Ephesus warning from Paul as well as God's chastisement in the Revelation letter show that we today need to keep a close watch on our relationship with the Lord. We need to KEEP WATCH, PERSEVERE, and ENCOURAGE the body of believers as well as pursue the lost.

The goal in this series is to understand the “Godly Values” that Paul gives to Timothy as we try to continue to shape that same Christ-like mindset in our own lives as we chose to have a deep relationship with God today. In todays sermon we look at the need for all of us as Christians to be absorbing God's Word. As we listen to the public reading of the Word, we should be encouraged by it and make sure to apply in in our lives. That application is one of the ways every day Christianity can be preached and taught to the world around us. We also have a call to teach the Word to others, but we must first be reminded to let it teach us in order to teach it to others. Through that spiritual growth and progress, we can effectively share the "Good News" with others. We also are looking at the need to NOT neglect our spiritual gifts. The church needs all parts of the body working and active to be effective in being the example we ought to be to our world. We must continue to exercise the spiritual gifts we see in scripture in order to keep them strong and active in our lives, and we must put them into practice for them to do any good for us and the church. Finally, we need to be diligent! Our spiritual life is to be the "absorbing things" in our life, not merely sidelines that we occasionally practice on Sundays. We have to dedicate ourselves to the task! In todays sermon we look at the next Godly Value that Paul tells Timothy to be an example of in 1 Timothy 4:12, “an example of purity. Just like all of us, if asked, would prefer to eat off of clean plates and clean silverware instead of plates and utensils with yesterday’s leftovers coated on them, we should prefer to have pure, clean spiritual lives. Living pure, undefiled, and uncontaminated lives is extremely important in this present evil world. It is possible to live a clean life in a corrupt world, just as much as it is possible for a salmon completely submersed in salt water its whole life to still need salt on it when you eat it. None of us are perfect and everyday we won’t be masters at doing everything in purity, but it is possible to have it a goal in our daily lives. God can protect us from the corruption of this evil world as we be examples of purity through repentance and the blood of Jesus to other believers as well as our sphere of influence. It can often be hard to trust God during uncertain times, but having faith in these times can help each of us find peace and grow while we spend time in His presence. We also find out that living by faith not only helps us and other believers, but it also has an influence on the lost. As we take a look at the story of David and Goliath as well as the story of Shadrach, Meshac, and Abednego we find that there is an eternal perspective that effects those around us when we just trust God and walk by faith. The goal in this series is to understand the “Godly Values” that Paul gives to Timothy as we try to continue to shape that same Christ-like mindset in our own lives as we chose to have a deep relationship with God today. In todays sermon we look at the next Godly Value that Paul tells Timothy to be an example of in 1 Timothy 4:12, “an example of love/Charity and spirit. Love really should be the motivation of our lives, we do not simply obey God to be applauded by men, but because we have a deep love for God and we want to follow His command to have the same kind of love for His people. Some translations add “in spirit” to describe a deep enthusiasm and excitement of being a child of God. When it comes to physical training, we have people/things that motivate us and give us confidence. The Bible tells us that we also have people/things that motivate us and give us confidence when it comes to spiritually training in Godly Values. We not only should be an example of God’s love to the body of believers, but also to our sphere of influence in our every day lives by valuing them and seeing them through God’s perspective. In todays sermon we look at the next Godly Value that Paul tells Timothy to be an example of in 1 Timothy 4:12, “an example of life/conduct/conversation. There are so many Biblical examples of how our lives need to be an example to this world that we truly have life and life abundantly, springs of living water inside of us, and new life that is unlike the life we once lived. We need to be walking in this “life” that Jesus paid for us to walk in so that the world we live in might get a taste of the overflowing joy, hope and peace we can experience in the chaos of this world because we truly do serve a risen Savior who is alive in us today. We are to do this by bringing the aroma of Christ everywhere we go by being the temple of the Holy Spirit. This week’s “WEEKLY EXERCISES” -Don’t be a hypocrite: Titus 1:10-16 -Be a VISUAL example: “Get out and reach the people who are withered and help them get restored through a relationship with God, so that they too would understand where their source of life comes from.”

“If we were to put as much energy into our spiritual life as an athlete does into their training for a temporary competition, we will grow and accomplish much for God and His Kingdom.” After our sermon a couple weeks ago about “going deeper”, there was an evident need for a series on 1 Timothy chapter 4 on how to practically “go deeper” and have a foundational Christ-like mindset through the Biblical Christian habits that Paul instructed to Timothy as he trained him up to have a Christ minded ministry. The goal in this series is to understand the “Godly Values” that Paul gives to Timothy as we try to continue to shape that same Christ-like mindset in our own lives as we chose to have a deep relationship with God today. In todays sermon we look at 1 Timothy 4:10-12 to understand that spiritual exercise is not easy; we must labor and strive/suffer reproach. The word translated for “strive” is an athletic word from which we get the word “agonize” in English. This word is a picture of an athlete straining and giving their best to win by excelling, working at, and putting in time for growth in their training. 1 Timothy 4:12 reminds us that we should not make excuses for the training we need to be examples to the body of believers and to our spheres of influence in the world. Just as we make many excuses not to physically train or exercise, we also make excuses not to spiritually exercise. Don’t feel alone though, there were many men and women in the Bible who made excuses too. But, the important thing isn’t the excuse we make, rather it is whether or not we are being an example of Christ to others. We specifically look at this through the lens of the Godly Value behind our “word” and “speech” in this message.
