Ordinary Things, Extraordinary Grace: Baptism

October 10, 2021 • Annette Stiles Pendergrass

Today in worship we conclude a two-week sermon series on the sacraments called, “Ordinary Things, Extraordinary Grace.” Over the past two weeks, we have done an in-depth dive into our United Methodist theology of the sacraments, and what they mean for our ordinary lives. Through simple elements, like water, bread, and juice God meets us, redeems us, and continues to sanctify us. Today, we will read multiple Scriptures from the Gospel of Matthew as we explore the importance of the sacrament of Baptism. Whether our baptism happened as a young child, or as an adult, we believe as United Methodists that this act claims us once and for all in the love of Christ. In this claiming, we are called beloved and sent to share God’s love with our world.

Ordinary Things, Extraordinary Grace

October 3, 2021 • Rev. Allee Willcox

Today in worship we begin a two-week sermon series on the sacraments called “Ordinary Things, Extraordinary Grace.” Over the next two weeks, we will do an in-depth dive into our United Methodist theology of the sacraments, and what they mean for our ordinary lives. Through simple elements, like water, bread, and juice, God meets us, redeems us, and continues to sanctify us. Today, we will explore Matthew 26:26-30 and hear Jesus’s words to the disciples at the Last Supper. As Jesus institutes the sacrament of communion, we are invited into a worldwide practice of redemption and love. Today, we celebrate World Communion Sunday and remember that we are joined together with brothers and sisters in Christ in the sacrament of communion.

Finding Peace in the Storm: Remembering Resurrection

September 26, 2021 • Annette Stiles Pendergrass

Today in Worship we conclude our sermon series, “Finding Peace in the Storm.” We all experience all kinds of storms in life. Sometimes the storms come from outside of us. Sometimes the storms rage within. But in the midst of all of these storms, we worship a God who is always with us, and we cling to a Savior who tells us, “My peace I give to you.” Over the last 4 weeks we have been digging into the promises of God that serve as our anchor in the storms and empower us to face our fears, anxieties and worries with faith. This week, we will explore Remembering the Resurrection with John 14 and John 16. As Jesus prepares to leave his disciples, Jesus tells them that they will not be left alone, and that the resurrection means we can know that one day our weeping will be turned to joy. As we remember the resurrection, we will remember that God’s promises of new life hold during our storms and the world’s chaos, too.

Finding Peace in the Storm: Attacking Anxiety

September 19, 2021 • Rev. Allee Willcox

Today in Worship we continue our sermon series, “Finding Peace in the Storm.” We all experience all kinds of storms in life. Sometimes the storms come from outside of us. Sometimes the storms rage within. But in the midst of all of these storms, we worship a God who is always with us and we cling to a Savior who tells us, “My peace I give to you.” Over the next 4 weeks, we will be digging into the promises of God that serve as our anchor in the storms and empower us to face our fears, anxieties, and worries with faith. This week, we will explore Attacking our Anxieties as we hear about Peter walking on the water with Jesus in Matthew 14. Though Peter has a mix of doubt, fear, and faith, he steps out with courage to be with Jesus in his faith. Jesus is with us as we, too, conquer our own anxiety and are invited out of the boats of our lives.

Finding Peace in the Storm: Examining Evidence

September 12, 2021 • Annette Stiles Pendergrass

Today in Worship we continue our sermon series, “Finding Peace in the Storm.” We all experience all kinds of storms in life. Sometimes the storms come from outside of us. Sometimes the storms rage within. But in the midst of all of these storms, we worship a God who is always with us and we cling to a Savior who tells us, “My peace I give to you.” Over the next 4 weeks we will be digging into the promises of God that serve as our anchor in the storms and empower us to face our fears, anxieties and worries with faith. This week we will hear the familiar story of Jesus asleep in the boat while a storm rages around him in Mark 4. We will examine the evidence of God’s power in our lives, and seek to deepen our faith in Jesus, who is able to calm all of our fears and storms.

Finding Peace in the Storm: Facing Fear

September 5, 2021 • Rev. Mike Mayes

Today in worship we begin a new sermon series, “Finding Peace in the Storm.” We all experience all kinds of storms in life. This week we begin by exploring the words of assurance and comfort found in Psalm 23, trusting the Holy Spirit to enable us to hear and experience this most familiar scripture in a new way.
