Let Justice Roll On

Let Justice Roll On (Part 4)

August 29, 2021 • Amos 2:6–7

Every once in a while God sends a messenger to bring a word to rouse us from our spiritual slumber. This past weekend was one of those times. Our guest speaker, Ms. Vanessa Russell shared a message no, a call to action which demands a response. Vanessa offered a disclaimer as some of the content is shocking and may be triggering and suggested actions to take to address this to include taking a break and prayer...

Let Justice Roll On (Part 3)

August 22, 2021 • Pastor Tammy Long • Amos 4:4–5, Amos 5:21–24

This message continues the sermon series through the book of Amos. As a brief recap, in the first message we learned that God had a plan for Amos, just as he has a plan for each of us, to be a prophetic witness to speak up and be God’s voice, as well as his hands and feet, in this broken world. In last week’s message, our takeaway was to prayerfully consider ways we may overtly and inadvertently perpetuate injustice in the places God has placed us. Today, in Amos chapters 3-5, we see Israel continue to perpetuate injustice because of their sinful behaviors and choices that went against God. Let’s explore what we can learn from them for today, as we look at what God’s Word has to say about true worship and justice...

Let Justice Roll On (Part 2)

August 15, 2021 • Pastor Tammy Long • Amos 1:3, Amos 2:16

Amos, the shepherd turned prophet, is proclaiming coming destruction to nations by preaching what is called War Oracles. Such War Oracles, found also in other prophetic books, encourage God’s children to trust God to protect them and destroy the nations that threatened them. Before the army would go into battle, the priest or prophet would seek whether the battle was God’s will, with the promised defeat of their enemies. These war oracles would fan enthusiasm as troops agreed with the prophet’s report, shouting their approval. After proclaiming War Oracles against the surrounding nations, Amos then proclaimed imminent punishment for the people of Judah and Israel, who are God’s people, but have been rejecting God’s justice to love as God loves. Let’s explore whether we, as the Church, are just and loving towards others to let justice roll on like a river...

Let Justice Roll on (Part 1)

August 8, 2021 • Pastor Tammy Long • Amos 1:1–2

“Let justice roll down like a river, and righteousness like an everflowing stream” (Amos 5:24). This is a confession for forgiveness where we’ve missed the mark for justice and a rallying cry for righteousness. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quoted this text in his letter from a Birmingham jail addressing his disappointment with criticism and complacency from certain clergy during the Civil Rights movement. Let’s explore how, like Amos, we might be a prophetic witness for justice today...
