God Tests Because He Loves

In one of the most moving episodes in the Bible, God’s interaction with Abraham climaxes with an important divine oath of conditional promises that are unconditionally guaranteed as a result of Abraham’s preparedness to obey God and sacrifice his son. The foreshadowing of a loving father’s willingness to sacrifice his son points straight to Jesus.

A Promise to Remember

God’s everlasting promise continues to come to fruition as Abimelech attributes Abraham’s success to God alone…”God is with you in all that you do.” We find an expansion of the concept of covenants and treaties to prevent conflict between parties.

God is at Work in the Mess

We need to understand why Pharaoh took Sarah In Genesis 20 to lead to an understanding of Abimelech’s action conflicting with God’s promises. God promises that Sarah will bear Abraham as a son in this case, and God works through the conflict.

A Demonstration of Total Depravity

God underscores the reason for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah – the total depravity of the people. The men of Sodom are contrasted with Lot, who seeks to protect visitors from being sexually molested. It’s an attitude that parallels that of Abraham. God is Just and Judges Rightly

God is holy and imminently righteous in His condemnation of the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham’s intercession for the Gentile cities is in line with his calling to be the vehicle of blessing the entire world.

God Does the Work

God appears in his divinity to work through Abraham. The theme of generous hospitality and Abraham’s changed heart appears in connection with Lot by chapter 19

The Abrahamic Covenant

In a series of speeches God announces that he will establish an eternal covenant with Abram and his offspring. This Abrahamic covenant will involve Abram as the father of many nations and his name is changed to Abraham. This covenant will be established by circumcision and points to the promise of ongoing nationhood of God’s people.

God is Faithful When We’re Faithless

This chapter emphasizes the attributes of the hearing and seeing nature of God – and His mercy. There is tension between Sarai, Hagar and Abram because of a desire for resolution of Sarai’s barrenness by Hagar bearing a child on her behalf.

A Valuable Inheritance

God’s divine pledge of a promised land to Abram’s descendants is an essential component of the concept of “nationhood.” This “great nation” guarantees God’s covenant, although the fulfillment won’t occur until several centuries after Abram’s death.

Abram receives a sign from God that he will have many descendants because God moves in to present himself through the miracle of life in light of barrenness. All we who are God’s people are a product of that promised relationship.

Lot is taken captive after separating from Abram, and the four kings invade the Jordan Valley. Abram's encounter with the kings of Sodom and Salem provides insight into his future aspirations and how God works through promises for His people.

Even through strife and competition we can retrace our steps back to God and lean into God’s promises. The Lord affirms that Abram’s descendants will possess all of the promised land of Canaan.

A severe famine in Canaan forces Abram to Egypt. God’s people will understand that God keeps his promises, in spite of all threats and tribulations and in spite of the morally dubious actions of His people – including Abram himself.
