The Abrahamic Covenant

In a series of speeches God announces that he will establish an eternal covenant with Abram and his offspring. This Abrahamic covenant will involve Abram as the father of many nations and his name is changed to Abraham. This covenant will be established by circumcision and points to the promise of ongoing nationhood of God’s people.

Finish the Race Strongly

This genealogy is a line of demarcation that divides the main story of Abraham and serves as an appendix pointing to a life lived well. The special reference to Rebekah leads to the upcoming events for Abaham’s progeny, which will have both blessings and sufferings.

God Tests Because He Loves

In one of the most moving episodes in the Bible, God’s interaction with Abraham climaxes with an important divine oath of conditional promises that are unconditionally guaranteed as a result of Abraham’s preparedness to obey God and sacrifice his son. The foreshadowing of a loving father’s willingness to sacrifice his son points straight to Jesus.

A Promise to Remember

God’s everlasting promise continues to come to fruition as Abimelech attributes Abraham’s success to God alone…”God is with you in all that you do.” We find an expansion of the concept of covenants and treaties to prevent conflict between parties.
