Beautiful Outlaw

July 26, 2012 • by John Eldredge

Excerpt: Reading the Gospels without knowing the personality of Jesus is like watching television with the sound turned off. The result is a dry, two dimensional person doing strange, undecipherable things. In Beautiful Outlaw, John Eldredge removes the religious varnish to help readers discover stunning new insights into the humanity of Jesus. He was accused of breaking the law, keeping bad company, heavy drinking. Of being the evil himself. He was so compelling and dangerous they had to kill him. But others loved him passsionately. He had a sense of humor. His generosity was scandalous. His anger made enemies tremble. He'd say the most outragious things. He was definitely not the Jesus of the stained glass. In the author's winsome, narrative approach, he breaks Jesus out of the typical stereotypes, just as he set masculinity free in his book, Wild at Heart. By uncovering the real Jesus, readers are welcomed into the rich emotional life of Christ. All of the remarkable qualities of Jesus burst like fireworks with color and brilliance because of his humanity. Eldredge goes on to show readers how they can experience this Jesus in their lives every day. This book will quicken readers' worship, and deepen their intimacy with Jesus.

There are few things more crucial to us than our own lives. And there are few things we are less clear about. This journey we are taking is hardly down the yellow brick road. Then again, that's not a bad analogy at all. We may set out in the light, with hope and joy, but eventually, our path always seems to lead us through dark woods, shrouded with a low-lying mist. Where is this abundant life that Christ supposedly promised? Where is God when we need him most? What is to become of us? The cumulative effect of days upon years that we do not really understand is a subtle erosion. We come to doubt our place, we come to question God's intentions toward us, and we lose track of the most important things in life. We're not fully convinced that God's offer to us is life. We have forgotten that the heart is central. And we had no idea that we were born into a world at war. (http://store.ransomedheart.com/waking-the-dead.html, 1-2)

Elevating the Ordinary

October 6, 2021 • Stasi Eldredge, Jamie Goudie • Psalm 27:4, Galatians 2:20

Jamie Goudie joins Stasi in the studio for a conversation about inviting our beautiful God into the ordinary ins and outs of our days. Beauty matters to God, and as we practice opening our hearts to him amidst the messy and the mundane, we quickly discover that God cares about the details of our humanity and is available to us in every moment of our lives. SHOW NOTES: Scripture: Psalms 27:4 (NIV): One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. Galatians 2:20 (NIV): I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Song: Artist by Laura Hackett Park Books: The Hidden Art of Homemaking by Edith Schaeffer Every Moment Holy by Douglas Kaine McKelvey and Ned Bustard

SHOW NOTES: Cheryl Wright’s book: His Warrior Princess: A Girlfriend's Guide to Being Lit from Within Scripture: Revelation 3:20 (the Passion Translation): “Behold, I’m standing at the door, knocking. If your heart is open to hear my voice and you open the door within, I will come in to you and feast with you, and you will feast with me.” Isaiah 44:5 (NLT): “Some will proudly claim, ‘I belong to the Lord.’ Others will say, ‘I am a descendant of Jacob.’ Some will write the Lord’s name on their hands and will take the name of Israel as their own.” John 17:22-23 (NLT): “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” Quote from J.I. Packer, Knowing God pg 41-42: “What matters supremely, therefore, is not, in the last analysis, the fact that I know God, but the larger fact which underlies it—the fact that he knows me. I am graven on the palms of his hands [Isa. 49:16]. I am never out of his mind.”

Meeting God in the Desert

November 17, 2021 • Stasi Eldredge, Michelle Patterson, Karen Christakis • Hosea 2:14, Psalm 86:11–12, Hosea 2:15, Psalm 77:1–8, Psalm 77:11

Jesus is the God of the Valley, just as much as he is the God of the Mountaintop. In this conversation, Stasi, Michelle Patterson, and Karen Christakis talk about what it has been like for them to meet God in the desert. Friends, all of our tears are treasured by God, and when we turn to him in difficult times it is not only worship, it is a rescue. SHOW NOTES: Scripture: Hosea 2:14 (NIV) Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her. Psalms 86:11-12 (NIV) Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. Hosea 2:15 (NIV) There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt. Psalms 77:1-8 (NIV) I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted. I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint. You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak. I thought about the former days, the years of long ago; I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked: “Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again? Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time? Psalms 77:11 (NIV) I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. Psalms 13:1 (NIV) How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? Psalms 56:8 (TPT) You’ve kept track of all my wandering and my weeping. You’ve stored my many tears in your bottle—not one will be lost. For they are all recorded in your book of remembrance. Romans 8:38 (NIV) For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, Luke 7:36 (NIV) When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. Psalms 42:11 (NIV) Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Book: Waking the Dead by John Eldredge (pages: 147-148) Poems: UNTITLED ~ KJ Ramsey @kjramseywrites We spend so much trying to overcome pain, when we could be watching for the miracle of being met in the middle of it. Right in the middle of your weakness, dare to watch your life with expectancy because there is still a Shepherd who sees you and he’s ready to multiply the loaves, if you’ll let your losses be an offering. THIS IS THE TIME TO BE SLOW ~ John O’Donohue From: To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings This is the time to be slow, Lie low to the wall Until the bitter weather passes. Try, as best you can, not to let The wire brush of doubt Scrape from your heart All sense of yourself And your hesitant light. If you remain generous, Time will come good; And you will find your feet Again on fresh pastures of promise, Where the air will be kind And blushed with beginning.

Christ is Enough

October 20, 2021 • Stasi Eldredge • Psalm 23:5, Psalm 103:5, Psalm 131:2, Genesis 17:1, Psalm 23:1

Something is revealed in our story when we feel like we don’t have enough—enough provision, enough safety, enough love. Through verses and stories, Stasi speaks to this question: What does it mean to be satisfied by God and to trust him as our provider for the things that matter most? In Christ, we have enough, and—because Christ dwells in us—we are enough. SHOW NOTES: (Verses) Psalm 131:2 (NIV): But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. Genesis 17:1 (NIV): When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Psalm 103:5 (NIV): who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalm 23:1 (NIV): The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. Psalm 23:5 (NIV): You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
