As the allotments for the tribes of Israel are established in the Promised Land, Caleb reminded Joshua of God’s promise for his portion of land. For 45 years, Caleb remained wholehearted to the Lord, believing that God would come through on His promise. God blesses those who do not waver in their faith and devotion to God. Do you view God as being small and manageable or do you view God as being big, having both control over the universe and also capable of having a near, intimate relationship with you? This week, Nate Miller continued in our Joshua series with the story of the Isrealites’ victory over five Canaanite kings with a miraculous intervention from God. Joshua knew God to be a big God who listens to the prayers of his people and responds with supernatural power. The result is defeat of the inhabitants of the land and rest from war. While Joshua leads God’s people well, thousands of years later, we see Jesus enter the scene as the better Joshua who will defeat the ultimate enemies and deliver his people into peace and rest. How’s your prayer life? In Joshua 9, the Israelites got into trouble because they failed to seek the Lord and trusted in their own wisdom. It’s a pitfall we can easily fall into, too. We need God’s power and wisdom to equip us to live God-honoring lives! Trusting in our own wisdom will lead to a prayerless life, devoid of God’s power and susceptible to walking into foolishness. But if we trust God and seek His wisdom, it will lead to a vibrant life of prayer and connection to Him. As His children, we have direct access to God through Christ! Chris Nagel continued our series through Joshua with Achan’s tragic disobedience. God told the Israelites not to take anything from Jericho for themselves, but Achan disobeyed and the consequences were devastating. God is serious about sin, and we should be, too. The extent to which we minimize sin in our hearts is the extent to which we limit our heart’s ability to treasure Christ. It’s because of Jesus’ death and resurrection that sin no longer enslaves us and God’s wrath is turned away from us. Everything changes when our true treasure is knowing God! Chad continued in Joshua chapter 5 when God calls the Israelites to consecrate themselves again to the Lord in a covenant renewal. As God set apart the Israelites as His chosen people from the surrounding nations, He also desires that we would be set apart for Him in our cultural moment. Our relationship with God is a covenantal relationship - not based on our own efforts, but based in the love of God for us. Through consecration, we give God our best "yes" and He reminds us again of His commitment to us and the purposes He has for us. Do we know the skill of stepping into all God has for us? In Joshua, the people of God had the inheritance of the promised land, but taking possession of it required something of them. They were to be strong and courageous, and they were to be radically obedient to God's word. These commands were linked with God's promises of His blessing and His presence with His people. As followers of Jesus, we also have an inheritance. Our inheritance is the Kingdom of God! And just like in Joshua, we must have bold faith and radical obedience to experience the blessing of God and His presence in our lives. What does it look like for us to be a Joshua Generation? As we look at the story of Joshua, we find that the messages in this book hold true for us today. Joshua valued the presence of God, was intent to listen when God spoke and faithfully stepped out in obedience. When God commands, He always attaches the promise of an inheritance for those who remain faithful - and God has an inheritance for us, too!
