Sermon Title: “Joshua, The Commander” (Pastor Bob) Sermon Text: Joshua 1:10-18 Summary: Joshua knew God had called him to lead the people into victory over the inhabitants of Canaan. Christians receive their calling in different ways. How can you know your calling is from the Lord? It must always be tested through letting the Scriptures control your thoughts and feelings, letting them alone evaluate circumstances and the advice received from others. Yet even this is not enough if we do not have what Joshua had. What is that? Faith in God! If we truly believe the Lord is our helper and will never leave or forsake us, then we are not afraid of what others can do to us. This is why people followed Joshua and said to him, “Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous." Sermon Title: “Courage for the Mission” (Pastor Bob) Sermon Text: Joshua 1:1-9 Summary: In Joshua chapter 1, God commands Joshua three times in just nine verses to be strong and courageous in fulfilling his mission to conquer the land so His people will find rest. How can someone be commanded to be strong and courageous? Joshua’s commission and mission was grounded in God’s Word. Joshua could only be strong and courageous if he knew God’s Word, talked about God’s Word, meditated on God’s Word and obeyed it in its entirety. He faithfully succeeded in all these ways and therefore was a successful servant and soldier in the Lord’s army! The people of Israel historically were not faithful to know, talk about, meditate on, and obey God’s Word. Due to their disobedience, they never entered God’s rest. It would take another Joshua to successfully lead God’s people into His everlasting rest. Meditation: Philippians 1:20-21 Call to Worship: Psalm 31:19-24 N.T. Reading: Hebrews 4:1-11
