The Ten Commandments were given to us by God to show what He wants for the lives of those who follow Him. They provide a picture of faithful devotion to Him and others. If we are honest, none of us obey them faithfully, which is why we need a pathway to God. That is what Jesus provides us. Accepting Him as our Savior and Leader creates a new life fueled by gratitude and His Spirit. There’s more to the Ten Commandments than meets the eye. In this series, we’ll dig into them together to gain a better appreciation for God’s design for our lives.
Don’t Worship Other Gods
April 16, 2023 • Rusty Coram
Jesus referred to this as the greatest commandment. We are told to worship Him with all our heart, soul, and mind. This is the starting place.
Don’t Make Idols
April 23, 2023 • Rusty Coram
The word ‘idols’ can bring to mind figurines or other types of totems. But an idol is anything we give priority to over God. Things like money, power, relationships, possessions, and popularity can become idols.
Keep God’s Name Holy
April 30, 2023 • Rusty Coram
Carrying God’s name is a privilege that has great responsibility. Those who know Him need to show God’s nature and character in all we say and do.
Keep the Sabbath
May 7, 2023 • Brandon Bennick
In the story of Creation, God rested on the seventh day. Why is that important to us today? Sabbath isn’t something we’re bound to; it’s a promise we’re invited to enjoy.
Honor Your Parents
May 14, 2023 • Rusty Coram
We are born with a tendency to test boundaries and break rules. God calls us to show respect and obey our parents and other authorities in our lives. When done correctly, they should be a source of comfort, provision, and safety for us.
Do Not Murder
May 21, 2023 • Brandon Pendleton
Human life is precious. All people are made in God’s image and deserve respect. Yes, we are broken, but this command makes the welfare of others a responsibility of us all.
Tell the Truth
May 28, 2023 • Rusty Coram
When we lie, we are not reflecting God’s character, which is love and truth. Furthermore, we can cause great damage to the credibility and reputation of others. Lying is self-destructive and dishonors God and the new life we’ve been given.
Don’t Steal
June 4, 2023 • Rusty Coram
It’s plain and simple – we are not to take anything that belongs to another person. Property seems the most obvious application here, but it also covers things like stealing another person’s reputation, trust, and dignity.
Don’t Commit Adultery
June 18, 2023 • Rusty Coram
This one commandment covers a multitude of things: relationships, sexuality, and both physical and emotional sin. When God commands us to not commit adultery, He is protecting our bodies, hearts, and souls.
Don’t Covet
June 25, 2023 • Brandon Pendleton
To covet means to desire or long for something that doesn’t belong to you. This commandment targets the heart and mind of each of us, where sin originates. Envy is the love of self rather than love of God and His provision for us.
