Joy Is Our Sustaining Strength Day 5
May 1, 2026 • Pastor Sam Smucker • James 1:2–5, Psalm 16:11
Day 5: Choosing Joy as a Lifestyle Reading: https://www.bible.com/bible/116/jas.1.2-5.nlt; https://www.bible.com/bible/116/psa.16.11.nlt Devotional: Joy is an attitude we choose, rooted in our relationship with Jesus. When troubles come—not if, but when—we can consider them opportunities for great joy because they deepen our dependence on God. The Holy Spirit lives in you with all His attributes, including joy. It's always available, but sometimes we must intentionally enter into it. Set your mind on heaven's realities, not earthly troubles. Feed your joy with God's Word, worship, and conversation with Jesus. Don't let circumstances or the enemy steal what Christ has given you. Like David, you can pray, "Restore to me the joy of Your salvation." The fountain of salvation is deep—drink from it daily with joy. Reflection: What daily practice will help you maintain joy regardless of circumstances? Closing Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of joy that sustains me through every season. Help me choose joy daily, worship through trials, and reflect Your presence to a watching world. In Jesus' name, amen.
Joy Is Our Sustaining Strength Day 4
April 30, 2026 • Pastor Sam Smucker • Philippians 2:19–30
Day 4: Life-Giving Relationships Reading: https://www.bible.com/bible/116/php.2.19-30.nlt Devotional: Paul found joy in relationships with people like Timothy and Epaphroditus—those who genuinely cared and stuck with him through hardship. Everyone needs someone they can pour into and someone they can call when life gets tough. These life-giving relationships bring joy and strength. If you feel isolated, ask the Lord to show you one or two people with whom you can build authentic connection. Family relationships can be challenging, but prayer changes hearts. Instead of rehearsing offenses, pray for softened hearts and restored unity. Stop talking about the negatives and start declaring God's power to heal relationships. Joy increases when we're connected to others in meaningful, Christ-centered ways. Reflection: Who has God placed in your life for mutual encouragement and support?
Joy Is Our Sustaining Strength Day 3
April 29, 2026 • Pastor Sam Smucker • Ephesians 2:8–10
Day 3: Working Out Your Salvation Reading: https://www.bible.com/bible/116/eph.2.8-10.nlt Devotional: Salvation is not earned by good works—it's a gift received by grace through faith. However, we are called to "work hard to show the results" of our salvation. This means our lives should give evidence that Christ lives in us. Walking in love when it's difficult, extending forgiveness when we've been wronged, serving others with kindness—these require effort. They're not always easy, but they demonstrate that we belong to Jesus. We are God's masterpiece, created for good works He planned long ago. Your obedience to the Holy Spirit's promptings, your choice to be kind to everyone, your decision to forgive—these are the beautiful evidences of salvation at work in you. Reflection: What evidence of Christ's work is visible in your daily life?
Joy Is Our Sustaining Strength Day 2
April 28, 2026 • Pastor Sam Smucker • Philippians 2:12–18
Day 2: Joy Deeper Than Circumstances Reading: https://www.bible.com/bible/116/php.2.12-18.nlt Devotional: Paul wrote about joy while imprisoned, facing possible execution. This reveals a profound truth: joy is a calm delight not dependent on what surrounds us but on who lives within us. It's deeper than a smile, stronger than laughter—it's an attitude rooted in Jesus Christ. Paul instructs us to "do everything without complaining and arguing." Why? Because complaining requires no faith, but choosing joy in difficulty demonstrates trust in God's goodness. When we worship during trials, we give God an open door to work in our lives. The widow who said, "The Lord filled me with hope" while holding her deceased baby understood this. Joy sustains us when nothing else can. Reflection: What situation currently tempts you to complain rather than trust?
Joy Is Our Sustaining Strength Day 1
April 27, 2026 • Pastor Sam Smucker • John 15:9–12
Day 1: The Gift of Joy Reading: https://www.bible.com/bible/116/jhn.15.9-12.nlt Devotional: Jesus didn't come to give us a life of depression or despair—He came to fill us with His joy. This joy isn't dependent on our circumstances but flows from remaining in His love. When we obey His commandments and love one another, we position ourselves to receive the overflow of His joy. Notice that Jesus endured the cross "for the joy set before Him"—that joy was you and me, redeemed and restored. Today, recognize that you are a source of joy to Jesus. Your very existence brings Him delight. Let this truth anchor you: His joy is available to you right now, not because everything is perfect, but because He is with you. Reflection: Where have you been seeking joy in circumstances rather than in Christ's presence?
