Merry Christmas, IBC! From a virgin birth to God becoming flesh, the Christmas story is filled with many shocking

surprises. Likewise, the account of Jesus’ death is one of amazing paradoxes. As Pastor John MacArthur wrote, “God treated Jesus on the cross as if He lived your life so He could treat you as if you lived His.” Isaiah 53 describes the death and success of the Messiah, without which Christmas would have no meaning and we would have no hope.

The Messiah's Humility

All of us have miserably failed in living as servants of God. Because of our sins and transgressions, we need a Servant of the Lord who humbly lives and suffers in our place. Isaiah 42 introduces us to “the Servant,” an individual God promised to send to do His will and save His people. The Servant is described in Isaiah 42:1-4, 49:1-7, 50:4-9, and 52:13-53:12.

In our series “Christmas in Isaiah,” We’ve seen prophecies of Messiah’s birth in 7:14 and Messiah’s titles in 9:6-7. These brought hope for the prophet’s day and for the future. The Messiah's Titles

Pastor Andrew Davis said, “In every epoch of history, humanity has sought a righteous form of government, but the depravity in every nation has made it impossible.” Due to Israel’s sin, they found themselves in distress, darkness, gloom, and anguish (Isaiah 8:11-22). Without God, we all personally find our nation and ourselves in despair. We long for joy, peace, and righteousness in this world, but our sin makes these impossible to achieve through our own efforts. Yet, hope dawns in Isaiah 9 as the promised Messiah is prophesied to change our darkness to light, our gloom to joy, our wars to peace, and our corruption to righteousness. Isaiah 9:1-7 shows us the benefits we possess when we trust in the promised Messiah.
