The needs of our world and of the people in our lives pull us in like a magnet. We rightfully follow the desire to help and to care, but if we’re not careful we can become so entangled in the needs of this world that we end up feeling the constant weight of the world on our shoulders. The path to a more carefree life is the practice of giving “it” up to God.

Believe

Sometimes we will enjoy the gift of a “lightning bolt” experience in our relationship with God - some “Aha!” moment when all of a sudden everything seems to fall into place and we feel particularly close to God. However, much of the rest of the time our life of faith is more ordinary and everyday in its nature - our feelings of closeness to God come and go. It’s easy to give in to the temptation of assuming that God is far away when we don’t feel close to Him - and it’s for that very reason choosing to believe the facts that we know to be true about Him and His love for us can make all the difference in our attitude and sense of well-being, even when we might not feel close to God in a given moment.

Kindness to Ourselves

Jesus calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves - but He is assuming we do love ourselves. All too often we push ourselves far beyond the limits of a healthy way of life and offer little love or kindness to the frazzled, stressed, and challenged parts of our inner being - Jesus invites us to learn to receive His love and especially His kindness to us - a kindness we might find difficult to receive, but a kindness we very much need.

Unplugging: Fixing Your Eyes on Jesus

We are so bombarded by information overload in our time that people increasingly have a difficult time paying attention to anything or anyone for more than a few moments before becoming distracted with the next thing clamoring for our attention. In the midst of all this, we are called to “fix our eyes upon Jesus” as we run the race of faith in our time - Jesus is our one and only constant in an ever-changing, quickly-moving world.
