Extra-Mile Mentality

“Don’t get mad; get even!” It’s a tempting mantra, and we easily justify it. As good as it would feel to “get even,” is there something better? And if there’s a better way, do I care? Let’s consider the surprising words of Jesus from his most talked-about sermon, all about going the extra mile for people who don’t deserve it. This won’t be easy! But let’s walk a mile or two with Jesus and see where we end up.

The Power of AND

Jesus focused on the one, but he didn’t stop there! He looked into that person’s life and had compassion for them. But as we see in the Gospels, the “compassion” Jesus had was always followed by something more – “and”! Jesus had compassion, and he acted, as we’ll see in today’s message. Combined with the previous steps in this series, we see how God wants to use us to change the world, one person at a time!

As we continue our current sermon series, One at a Time, we are continuing to discover how we can make an impact in the lives of others by placing ourselves into situations where God can use us. This week, we are examining how we can help others when they are at an intersection in their life. By relying on God’s Spirit, we can love like Jesus by doing simple, ordinary actions, that can produce extraordinary spiritual results.

The Proximity Principle

As we seek to discern the “one” God is directing us to, we may overlook the Proximity Principle. Isn’t it possible that if God is at work in us and seeking to use us to help another, that He will bring us into close proximity with that person(s). Sometimes the one God wants us to help is right there in our circle of influence, or He brings someone into that circle that He’s preparing us to help. We’ll see how that works out in the Bible and real life in today’s message.
