Games People Play - "The Game of Life"

February 11, 2024 • Pastor Scott Weatherford • Genesis 37

This has been a fun series. We have traced very familiar board games and unpacked so very deep theology. We gave this series because of this last topic. The game of life. Life is no game. We are given this life by God to live for his glory. Your life matters. Your connections matter, your spiritual growth matters, your serving matters, your sharing the gospel matters, your leadership matters, your generosity matters. Your life leaves a wake no matter how well loved you are, over looked you feel, insignificant you seem, popular you are perceived…you matter. This is no game, this is your life.

Games People Play - "Twister"

February 4, 2024 • Pastor Scott Weatherford • John 8:1–11

My family didn’t really play board games. I can’t remember my parents ever playing a board game with us. I do remember Twister. I found it odd and uncomfortable. There was a level of intimacy that was just a bit off for me. When we chose this game as a topic of teaching I couldn’t help but consider how we get things twisted. Not the game but in our minds. I seems the view of human sexuality and even gender is twisted. How do we stop playing the game and find healing?

Games People Play - "Trivial Pursuit"

January 28, 2024 • Pastor Bard Letsinger • Mark 10:17–25

The board game Trivial Pursuit was released in 1981 and quickly became one of the decade’s biggest fads with 20 million units sold in 1984 alone. Like any board game there was no prize, other than bragging rights, for winning. Still, people became obsessed and many spent many hours reading, studying, and looking up obscure facts to fill their heads with the knowledge needed to win the game. For many it became a “trivial pursuit” trying to win a game of Trivial Pursuit. From a distance we can see how silly it is to become focused on something trivial, devoting the bulk of our time, energy, and finances to a goal that in the end does not make a difference in our lives relationally or spiritually. But what are we pursuing in this life to try and make it better? Are we pursuing the things other people have thinking our life would be better if we just had those things? Are we pursuing an education thinking that a degree or the prestige of it will bring us happiness? Are we pursuing biblical knowledge thinking that if we just learn God’s word all our problems will resolve themselves? If you win in a trivial pursuit what do you win?

Games People Play - "Sorry - Hope From Bitterness"

January 7, 2024 • Pastor Bard Letsinger

"Games People Play" Week 1 of our first series of 2024 we look at the classic board game "Sorry!" When you were a kid and another kid hurt your feelings, or took a toy you were playing with, their parent probably made them tell you they were "sorry". When they said it did you feel better? Probably not, because there is a difference between being sorry and asking for forgiveness. This week we will look at moving on from just saying "sorry" and learning how to ask for the relationship restoring "forgiveness" that we all seek.
