21st Century "Saviors"

Power

August 6, 2023 • Nathan Logsdon • 1 Kings 1—2

What is our motivator, goal, or focus when it comes to salvation? Who do I pursue? When we believe heaven is the goal we set Jesus to the side. We seek saviors of many kinds in effort to achieve heaven rather than one who died to save. Heaven is simply a place, a consequence to choosing Jesus. There’s not relationship with heaven.  When we see hell as the only motivator for salvation, we miss the richness of life in him. He’s only a Savior and there’s no need to follow him. There's no sacrifice of life that follows our belief in him.  But Jesus was loving enough to save, so we could be so bold to follow. And through this series, looking at the first 11 chapters of 1 Kings, we are going to explore some common saviors we cling to over Jesus.

Manipulation

”Not my will but yours be done” are words that ring loudly in light of us pursuing the Savior of manipulation and bending the world around us to our will.

Stuff

The dichotomy in which Solomon built a temple for God and a palace for his kingdom speaks to the heart of Solomon. Acquiring, having, and cataloging our stuff can quickly turn into a Savior we worship.

Audience

Sex, lust, and relationships have been pursued as Savior as long as sin has been around, and the same is true in the 21 century.
