What is Christmas all about? Trees and Lights? Presents and Stockings? A Baby and a Virgin? Or could it be that the Christmas story falls in with the rest of the puzzle pieces in part of God’s plan to change the world forever? Not only did the birth story fulfill prophecy, but it showed us a picture of the life and ministry of the Messiah (Savior). Today we see what happens around the birth of Jesus and that picture was fulfilled in the perfection and ministry of Jesus.

Christmastime is here! I am so excited this year! God has been good to us (as always). He has blessed us with many things, but the greatest blessing, of course, is Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior! Jesus came, He conquered, and He will return! The purpose of His coming is clearly defined in the text for today. Are you ready to see how Jesus coming as a Jew, to the Jews, is a blessing to us all? Praise the Lord – we are all blessed in Him!

Words change a lot through the years. Years ago, you might have heard someone say, “There goes a strapping young man.” My dad might have said he was “buff”. In the 90’s we heard that the man was “shredded” or “ripped”. But, whether the man is “as fit as a fiddle”, or just plain strong, we get the idea. Men AND women who are in great shape spiritually can be used by God to do amazing things. Are you a “brawny believer”? If so, God expects you to use those muscles!

Last week we discussed how the Bible teaches us to love others with our actions, words, and acceptance. Not that we should compromise the truth, or endorse immaturity, but instead that we must remember that our call to love is bigger than our call to establish rules or to make everyone see things the same as us (concerning debatable things). This week we finish the passage by seeing that our ACTIONS must always align with God and His will for our lives.

How do we live with others that believe differently from us in “debatable” areas of faith? How do we act towards others who practice their freedoms in Christ differently? Then…what in the world do we do ourselves? Do we follow suit? Do we not? The standard is found in love and faith. Do right by others, do right by God, and do it all in love. Perhaps you know exactly how to avoid a question so that you’re not really lying? Not all lines are fine. Today we learn that the line between conviction and judgment is bold—we need to know the difference. Do you know how to tell the difference?

For weeks we have seen that Love comes from God and that Christians must live in love. Now, as chapter 13 ends, we see a notable change in tone. Did Paul lose it? Did he decide to go all legalistic on us? Does it all tie together? Jesus loves us but that doesn’t mean that God is less holy or that He isn’t coming back. Is the Christian life summed up in the 10 Commandments? Follow the Law, be a good person, and go to Heaven? It is always easy to focus on the negative Commandments. War…Hurricanes…Family Issues…Elections…All of those things give me reason to pause, perhaps even to sigh. God however gives me reason to hope. He gives me strength to carry on, to live my faith, and to allow Him to do the best in each situation of life. Today we take a break from Romans to be reminded of where our ability to live faithfully comes from. Trust in the Lord, for HE is the Almighty and is very much upon His throne.

How does the separation of church and state actually work in practical terms? We don’t believe the church should run the government nor do we believe the government should interfere with our worship. Does that mean that our faith never intersects with our civil duties? Does it mean that God has one standard for the government and another for the church? Does it mean that God doesn’t care what happens in the government because it isn’t the church? Romans 13 addresses the purpose of the government and our relationship to it FOR Him. We must give to Caesar only what belongs to him—for God alone is worthy of our worship.
