Sunday | Overview - Matthew 16-20
January 19, 2025
This week we get to read from Matthew chapters 16-20. Jesus speaks powerfully about important topics in these chapters, and I pray we take His words to heart. Through numerous miracles, parables, and discussions with Pharisees, His disciples, and others, we see Jesus living and preaching His ministry boldly, with love and compassion.
Jesus, being the perfect teacher, asked vital questions in these chapters, beginning in 16, where He asked Peter the most important question you could ever answer in your life.
”But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Matthew 16:15
”You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16
Peter answered correctly. But what is your answer? Who do you proclaim Jesus to be?
Another question Jesus asked his disciples that we should ponder:
“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Matthew 16:26
This remains a highly relevant question for today’s world as well. Are you chasing your own glory? Or the glory of the creator of the universe?
In chapter 17 we see the healing of a demon-possessed boy. Jesus heals him after the disciples fail to, and when they ask why they failed, Jesus replies: “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20
Lord, help us to have that kind of faith this week!
