Jesus' followers never pledged unconditional allegiance to an emperor, even the good ones. Jesus himself taught us not to put our security and trust in the things of this life. Rather, he taught us to seek first the Kingdom of God. That Kingdom value comes into conflict when we don't apply it to our political ideologies and conversations. As the church, we are called to model the kind of crazy unity the early church had.
