Ten Plagues

May 14

Jo Krueger

God’s people, the Israelites, were slaves in Egypt. God sent Moses to Egypt to talk to Pharaoh and tell him to let the Israelites leave. But Pharaoh was very stubborn. He wanted the slaves to stay and do his work. So Pharaoh refused to free the Israelites.

Exodus 7:5 tells us what God said to Moses. “I will punish the people of Egypt, and they will learn that I am the Lord. Then I will lead my people out of their country.” God punished Egypt by causing ten terrible things to happen to the people and the land. These terrible things are called “plagues.” These plagues were also miracles because they happened by God’s power. For the next ten days, we will learn about these plagues.

Some people do not understand how God could do these terrible things to the Egyptian people. But God really showed His mercy through these plagues. He could have chosen to completely destroy the Egyptian nation. Instead, God chose to perform His miracles and show His power to the Egyptian people.

Some people today try to say that the ten plagues were things that just happened by accident in nature. God may have used things in nature to cause these plagues, but they truly happened because of His great power. Praise God today because He is so powerful!
