The First Day

January 3

Matt Keller

God was before all things. It is impossible for us to really understand what this means. We can only understand things that have a beginning and an end. That is because we live our whole life in time. But God was before time existed. God created time.

Genesis 1:1-2 tells us that God created space and time. “God created the sky and the earth. At first, the earth was completely empty. There was nothing on the earth. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s spirit moved over the water.” God made the sky and the earth, but the earth didn’t have any shape yet. Before God gave the earth a shape, He had to create space.

The next few verses in Genesis, chapter 1, tell us that God created light and darkness. He made them happen one after the other — light, then dark, then light. This is when God created time. Now, God had made a place for all physical things to live. He had created time so that things could live in order. God made all things to have a beginning and an end.

Enjoy God’s wonderful world today. And praise Him for all the things He has made for you!
